Extended Warranties?

And I dont blame manufactures for not having these long term warranties,  3-5 years seems about right.  Nobody can or should guarantee something like a car or truck for that long.  And if they did we would all just pay for it,  warranties arent free like you said, even the new vehicle warranty isnt free.

If the manufacture is not "on the hook' for materials and workmanship then I don't want to see what kind of product that produces. We no longer live in a Duesenberg world where the manufactures main focus in on product quality. Without a warranty they wouldn't even look at quality. Their focus is on bleeding your wallet now and for as long into the future as they feel you will tolerate. Currently they are boiling the frog slowly. Buyers would have already walked out on ALL the OEM's by now a few generations ago. Younger people have been conditioned to think that wolf in there pocket has a RIGHT to be there.

It's why the OEM in required by Federal Law to provide one. This isn't a ham sandwich we're talking about. If he produces just a truly awful design then he gets what Datsun and Yugo got. Kicked out of the club. But materials and workmanship warranties are like are like the lock on your front door. They keep honest people honest. The thieves will steal regardless. If I can't get 100,000 miles out of a $30,000 to $80,000 dollar purchase then horses are going to start looking really good to me. What an extended warranty is, is the dealer asking you to pay for the lock and give him the key, A snowball in a microwave stands a better chance of staying frozen that getting me to pay for EXTRA for what I ALREADY paid for in the strike price.

How would you feel about being FORCED to buy a new home every 5 years because materials, workmanship and design were so poor it rotted right out from under you?

They can do better and the only way to force them is a looooong mandated warranty.

I generally agree with you and people need to get out of the peace of mind approach, or hey I just spent 60k whats another 2-3k to protect my asset.  So I agree with you but there are some yeah buts.

Most of these plans are under 2k these days for bumper to bumper, and I would only do a manufactured branded warranty.  For 2k over 5-10 years, is 15-33 bucks a month a good investment,  for some people I would say yes.   To me buying a warranty if you own for less than 5 years is crazy you are throwing your money away.

You have to know the warranty game and whats written in them,  the house wins more than it loses, so in other terms you will pay more than they do.  Why do you think they sell you a warranty on on everything at the register these days.

Warranties are just insurance.  Insurance is legalized gambling.  But having insurance to protect your assests like houses and expensive items like cars makes sense, and is actually financially good decision. I have known guys that dole out so much in warranties and insurance of all kinds and I have always kind of been like, you know if you set aside that 500 a month into an interest bearing account you would be insuring yourself.  If you cant self insure for the most part when you retire you did things wrong or don know what you are doing.

I’ve owned 4 Hyundai’s. The vehicles that have 100K, ten year warranty. 6-60 bumper to bumper. Still have two going an 05 and 2011. The wife’s next new one will be another Genesis. If she parts with the 2011 Genesis.

You could not be more inaccurate in your statement! Learn well grasshopper.  Us older people learned in school a thing called an economic vote. They don't make what people will not buy. Not and stay in business. 😉 How did this generation get skunked into believing being stolen from was just part of life and you may leave the planet if you don't like it? Lord kids!

As far as I can tell as of my last buy GM/gm and I are parting ways when it comes to new vehicles. They got rid of my personal luxury cars. Put 2 many doors on trucks. Made half tons one tons. Got unbearably short with the warranty. Even ditched Victory Red. :wtf:

Just read an article yesterday. Net worth of the average American is like $125K. Media worth of those over 70 is $250K but their average worth is near a MILLION. GM is fishing in the wrong pond if they are chasing the money. Why? Because the younger ones will tolerate it, believe it is normal, believe they have no say in it. They just will not cast that economic vote. Well...and they wouldn't be caught dead is anything that didn't scream 'Look at ME'.

There are enough good used 3800 Buicks, Old's, NorthStar Cadillacs and 90's Vortec pickups to keep me away from the barn until my grandchildren die.

If I'm the only one voting they yea. GM gets it's way and we both get happy. But if people get tired of this GM will bend or break. As AMC, Packard, Tucker, Olds, or Plymouth if economic voting works.

He look, of you don't mind, I don't mind. It's your pocket they have their hand in.

Well not a boomer as you obviously are (dont get me started on that generation)or millennial but ok.   Now where I agree with you is where is the ceiling on these prices for cars and trucks.  Although numbers show the sale of these expensive vehicles show no sign of losing steam.    You single out GM, but really if I believe your rant it applies to really all of them.  The other reality is nobody wants little cars anymore.

The traditional model of buying and selling cars is probably about to change here in the next decade or so.  Leasing keep climbing,  EV will be here in force probably in ten years.  Can people afford 6 figure every day vehicles in 10 years,  probably not.

Absolutely. This is not just a GM thing...er...gm thing. LOL

Let me introduce myself. I'm Mr. Nobody. 😉  When I can no longer buy I walk....walker....whatever

Literally. I'm that guy and there are still tens of millions of us. But here's the thing. Ray Crock started a thing marketing to kids. Happy meals. Parents would put up with anything from Micky D to keep the rug rat happy. Ray 'made' a few generations of loyal customers grooming children, molding their thoughts and buying habits. Killing them as he goes.

These guys are not worried about MY generations money, they are looking further down the road. That's some sad crap right there. They will wait for us to hand it down then steal it.

:loser:

I'm not buying an extended warranty but that's me. Even if I get burnt to a crisp once or twice, it will still be cheaper in the course of a life time than the insurance. Kid you not. Insurance was intended, in the beginning to prevent financial disaster. NOT financial inconvenience. It would be cheaper to if every Tom, Dick and Harry wasn't gaming the system. But that's another issue. Fraud.
