Oil consumption 2.7 Turbo

Recommended Posts

  • 4 weeks later...

Consumed (NO LEAKS)  ~3/4 qt of Amsoil ASL 5w30 Signature Series in 5271 miles ( not excessive by GM standards) but I am testing to see if sulfated ash (SA )content of an oil MAY contribute to consumption in the L3B.

Dipstick always checked with at least 4 hours engine off.......... on level floor inside temp controlled garage.

Hypothesis:  the ring and cylinder design of this engine may NEED lower ash content to limit very light ash deposits that MIGHT impact ring seal.  High boost ( capable of 33 PSI ) and sulfated ash ( a way to measure ashy organo-metallic deposits from additive package).

1% or less Sulfated Ash = Dexos1 Gen 2

0.9% or less Sulfated Ash - Dexos1 Gen3   so GM knows something is going on to the premise.

Oil sample at oil drain yesterday will help guide the testing for SA potential causals.

Mine uses about 1 quart to 1.25 quarts in 6000 miles. I checked the oil after sitting overnight, at 50% OLM and it was barely on the bottom of the dipstick. Added 1/2-3/4 quart of oil. Then changed the oil again at 6200 miles, OLM was at 20%. was low another 1/2-3/4.

Been using Mobil1 5W30, just switched to Valvoline Full Syn 5W30...I don't expect it to use less oil, but who knows.

Good day. I have a 2021 silverado 1500 custom with the 2.7 and have been watching the oil since my last change at 20k miles. It had been done by the dealer each time prior but I could not get in and do not like going over so I had to change myself. I was shocked at how little oil came out (I put it back into old jug). I had barely 4 quarts. I contacted the dealer and they asked me to watch it and let them know. I checked it at 2100 miles into new oil change and I am 3/4 quart low on the stick. The dealer said they would call back later thst day with next steps but did not call. Plan prior was an oil consumption test with them changing oil and having to take it in every 500 miles for inspection. I will be following up this week.

Just checked my oil after ~2700 miles on the current oil change. I removed the fuses for AFM1 and AFM2 near the beginning of this oil change. I am running 5W30 full syn Valvoline this time.

Checked the oil with the engine cold, sitting for 3ish hours since last drove.

Oil showed on the dipstick about 1/2 way up the hatch marks.

This is considerably better than the last time I checked (when I had the fuses for AFM1 and AFM2 still installed). The oil level was barely on the dipstick after checking around 3000 miles on an oil change.
