AT4 towing change

Recommended Posts

My 2020 Sierra AT4, 1500 crew cab with a 5.3, has a tow rating of 9800lbs.  Reason I picked the 5.3 over the 6.2 and the 3.0 is that they were not only more expensive, but rated for towing up to 9200lbs instead.

I’ve noticed the 2021 AT4 with the 5.3 is now rated for 9200lbs, instead of 9800 lbs.

Anyone have a clue on what might’ve changed?

Something came out the other day, but no detail on why the change on certain 2020 1500’s. https://gmauthority.com/blog/2021/04/gm-to-replace-towing-labels-on-certain-2020-chevy-silverado-gmc-sierra-pickups/

Ford went through something similar on 2020 Super Duties a couple of months ago and payload capacities.

I mean is it that big of a deal? 9200# vs 9800#?? If you're towing anywhere close to 9000# I'd be wary to begin with. I'd be comfortable at ~80% of max tow weight, so roughly 7500#. Anything more than that, on a regular basis, I'd switch to an HD/2500. For one-time or very rarely towing across short distances, I'd be ok going to max-tow weight. Just my personal opinion...

I suppose that’s my point:  if I have X trailer to tow, and I took the max towing of a potential vehicle, multiplied by 80%, and it was ok, so it was bought;  but with a downward revised rating, if the 80% measure is now under the adjusted rating, maybe not so much the overall tow but especially the downrated tongue rating is exceeded, yeah, should have gotten a 2500 instead.  The truck was incorrectly advertised of being capable for what it is now not.
