Who else is dealing with the chip shortage issue?

I ordered a SLT CC, 5.3L /10spd back in January.  The order was accepted immediately and was built by late February.  It has has been sitting at 4200 status since then waiting for a module impacted by the microchip shortage.  The truck was built at the Silao plant.  No ETA has been provided to date.

 

I have been in contact with GM several times and they all but deny the chip issue.  They say that it is in “final quality checks” before shipment and that my dealer is the best source of information for when it will arrive.  My dealer says that they have no idea when the truck will be arriving or when the chip issue will be resolved.  

 

I am aware of the news articles on this and the low inventory issues.  But I’m surprised there isn’t more discussion since the impacts seem to be pretty far reaching.  Is anyone else who ordered a vehicle dealing with this?  Does anyone have any new insights from GM or their dealer as to how/when it’ll be resolved?

I am, but on 2500 Cargo vans, Ordered 12/08/20, Was supposed to be built in Feb 21, then April 21, then July 21 and now September 21. I gave up, Bought Nissan's, But they are telling me that they are having the same issue, I can't order any, whatever is on the lot is what's available.

My Sierra SLT 6.2 /10 spd was built the week of 3/22 and a delivery date of 4/22. It now has a delivery date of 5/9. As far as I can tell its still bayed at the plant  in Silao. 

My Dealer thinks its being held because of the chip issue and to check on it next week.

I ordered mine on Jan 6th, it was "built" the week of Feb 15th.  Found out a month later that it's waiting on parts because the the chip shortage.  I'm currently debating where my line in the sand is to demand a refund on my deposit.  I'm thinking 3 months is unacceptable.

Trucks are being held for chip shortage no matter what your being told. Big 3 is still producing trucks, but are unable to ship to dealers as they are waiting for chips.

My neighbor ordered a truck a few months ago, ejecting it to arrive in time for him to return from his deployment and start driving it.  The truck, a Custom Trail Boss with the 6.2, got held up.  He ended up settling for another Custom Trail Boss that was on the dealer's lot that had a 5.3 with AFM and 6-speed.  The truck has been compete garbage.  At 1,100 miles the engine went.  The tech found metal pieces in the engine that didn't belong to anything else in the engine.  He gets the truck back and a week later the trans overheats.  He expected the dealership to find nothing, but turned out the valve weren't opening to increase cooling, or so I've been told.  Truck could be complete and returned this week, and the math puts it at 29 days in the shop.  That's 1 day short of lemon law in California.  In the meantime, he's working with GM to have them buy back the truck.  When I asked about the status on the truck he originally ordered, he said the dealer told him it will hasn't shipped.  The dealer was trying to snag another 6.2 Custom Trail Boss that was originally headed to Texas, but that truck also got held up.  Now GM is saying that if he wants to complete the buyback it'll take a few weeks, but it could take a few months to get one of the 2 Custom Trail Boss 6.2s.  Now he's looking at other makes, and even used Chevy 2500s that are a few years older.  This whole fiasco is really messed up.  He's understandably frustrated.  He's GM loyal, but GM may be losing that loyalty.

Yep the chip shortage is real.  I work in an industry unrelated to automotive, but we use the same chip that is currently in short supply.  It is a pain, but it will get sorted out, eventually.  I feel bad for everyone whos waiting on a vehicle - so frustrating.  I lucked out and found one that was already built.

You can trust GM wants to ship the trucks.  Have patience (and maybe ask the dealer for some free service coupons because you had to wait so long).

I wouldn't trust any guidance on order timelines.  Not crazy about a vehicle that started production, paused, then finished.  I don't think there process is designed to work that way.  The interruption likely leads to quality issues.  I was going to order, but fortunately stopped before committing deposit.  I put a deposit on a Sierra AT4 that is supposed to arrive at dealer in a week.  We shall see.

I ordered a Sierra last December and it just got here a week ago which was supposed to be in around 6 to  8 weeks.

 

I was  looking at the build and  price page and the AFM chip is now an extra cost option at an insignificant cost that I assume GM is using as a marketing tool to sell vehicles without the AFM chip in them. Locally there is a large parking lot full of vehicles awaiting chips for final assembly. I wonder if it is possible for the manufacturer's to designate these as 2022 models when the chips do finally arrive in view of it getting close to model year change? My guess would be that if the vehicles have to remain as 2021 models there may be some serious bargains this fall unless it would be possible to market them as a "2022 Classic" model.

I think the year is tied to the vin no matter what. I'm sure those trucks have a vin. You might be right on the bargains, if the trucks aren't completed by 22.

GM is planning to build 2021 model trucks until Sept 24.........model year is coded in the VIN and cannot be changed.

Thanks for the info.  Do you know which factory your truck came from?  What transmission do you have?

Exactly....the sticker on door has vin and build date....pretty sure it would be fraud to mess with that.....

The truck came from Silao, GJ  Mexico with a 6 speed automatic. It stickered at 37,665 and I paid around 34,300 which is probably too much based upon my lackadaisical car buying skills but I did talk to another dealer that wanted about $2,000 over sticker to order it. I bought it for the new safety features thinking my driving skills were not as sharp as they were 50 years ago. I had a 2012 Sierra with 50,000 miles on it without even a ding on it that I was really happy with. Gave it to one of my children with the thought that if the new features saved me one accidental situation the new truck was worth its cost no matter what the cost was. 

Note that the 5.3 had the AFM chip mentioned. On the build and price page I think the AFM chip is a $50 option now.
