Whistling 2-way Radio Antenna’s

Recommended Posts

I installed 2 fender mount antennas. 1 is for my cell booster and the other is for my 2 way radio. They are both normal NMO mounts and on opposite sides of the truck on the rearmost top fender bolt position. Same place almost everyone puts them on every truck.

Now I’ve ran dozens of different make and year of trucks with 1 to 3 of these style mounts on them and never an issue before but on this truck as soon as you get up to highway speeds and especially into a headwind they whistle like crazy. And loud!!!

Anyone else run into this with this bodystyle or have any suggestions on how to fix the problem? I don’t want to go back to a magnetic mount. Scratched too many roofs and had too many wiped out by parkades, snow, car washes, etc.

Did you install the NCG CV3ANTNCG?  I have one mounted on my Sierra on the driver's side using an NMO Larsen 150/450/800.  It's only about a foot tall, but I do not experience any wind noise from it.

Only thing extra I did was to install some heat shrink tubing on the bracket in the area where it sits between the fender and the hood to eliminate any metal to metal rubbing.973042926_NCGMOUNT.thumb.jpeg.80d65044df2c75f8cdfdc6bb98d9a180.jpeg

My setup is a different antenna but mounted and routed pretty much the same.  I’ll get some pics today.

Sorry, the  NCG CV3ANTNCG is the antenna mount made by NCG (comet).  I didn't make that clear.

FYI, I had my truck up to about 80 the other day on the interstate and I noticed a slight whistling noise, but it was not too bad.

Since my setup is on the driver's side, I ran my coax through the grommet the hood release runs through.  Figured if I nicked the cable, it was mechanical and not electrical.

Anyway you could switch to a lower profile antenna without sacrificing performance?  It may decrease the noise for you.

Good luck,

MC

So I cut the antenna part off my booster antenna and the whistling from that antenna went away so I think I’m going to order a Browning stubby to replace it.

Now I just need to figure out my 2-way antenna.
