3.0 Duramax cranks but won’t start

Recommended Posts

This is a second TSB regards the camshaft timing sensor. The first which was previously for the replacement of the reluctor wheel, which involved extensive work to complete. This new one dated Aug 16 is to have a .5in or 5mm shim installed behind the sensor itself. It appears to be the fix for those of us who developed the same long crank/no start problem after the camshaft sensor reluctor wheel was replaced the first time. img20210827_08272025.pdf

GM has just stopped production of the 3.0 Duramax. They say it’s due to a supplier shortage. I call BS, they stopped production to figure out what’s going on with these engines.

That's what I'm doing🙃  I have an early build 20 with 26K and no problems of any kind. I believe most trucks with this problem are 21's and a very few late built 20's.

I’ve noticed that too. I can’t believe GM hasn’t been able to figure out what has changed between then and now that could cause the issue.

Did you have this done and it still just cranked over?

I have not but an owner on one of the Facebook pages had it done a week ago and had another crank no start on Friday. I haven’t allowed them to use me as a guinea pig for any of these repairs that haven’t worked.

Yeah I don’t understand why a cam sensor, trigger wheel and a shim would fix a intermittent problem.  Pretty ridiculous they can’t find the true problem.
