Wiring extensions on tailgate?

Recommended Posts

So...  just got into the queue to order a new 2022 GMC Dually 3500 Denali...   disturbed a little bit about the tailgate issues with camera's (with a slide in camper - need to remove tailgate whenever i use it...) and apparently GM's lack of understanding that some people do this...  so they don't make removing the tailgate very easy.    While no one apparently knows exactly what changes there will be to the 2022 from the 2021...  i don't hold my breath that they will fix this.  So, has ANYONE developed a system to make it easier to reach, and change out the wiring?   I would think if there was an available harness extension on the main wiring from the tailgate - you could ziptie it somewhere reachable?   I know you can purchase a wire for the camera (and camera to finish the circuit so don't lose all the cameras) - which i intend to do...  but what about that multi-pinned main connector?    Anyone?

I don't have anything to suggest, but you aren't alone on this.  I'm waiting on a 2021 3500HD Silverado that I'll be using for a slide-in.  The first project is the 360 camera nonsense.  I was hoping that they would have fixed the issue after the 2020s, but there is an updated Technical Service Bulletin that includes 2021 model year.

My plan is to generally take the approach of the TSB, but to try to get some use out of the camera - either a mount around the plate area (ick) or ideally behind the access slot for the tailgate wire.  FOV will be far from perfect but better than a black screen.  Also curious to see on the harness if there is a separate camera connection for the hitch view camera and whether that can somehow be used for a high mounted camera on the back of the slide-in.  During this whole ordeal I am hoping that the main connection can be relocated to make it easier to swap the harnesses.

I suppose You are talking about the TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) dated June 2020 - it's 20-NA-105.  under "Subject: 360 Camera Views go Blank with Tailgate Removed".....

That's the one.  https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10187756-9999.pdf

There is also a version on the GM upfitter site where the aspect ratio of the photos aren't messed up.  https://www.gmupfitter.com/files/media/photo/1466/UI Bulletin_170.pdf
