Drivetrain Parts to Maintain

Recommended Posts

Forgive my ignorance on 4WD systems, I understand the principles but want to be sure I maintain the parts properly for this and the truck

For normal usage, the owners manual says transfer case fluid every 72K mi

For normal usage, the owners manual doesn't give a time to change auto transmission fluid, for SEVERE usage is says every 72K miles.

How often should the front and rear axle (differentials I assume) lube be changed/services at all?  The owners manual doesn't seem to say anything.

For Normal usage, what's the suggestions for auto transmission and differential services?

Thanks,

Thanks,

What transmission do you have?  You may be able to check the condition of the fluid via the dip stick.

If you use 4wd auto often, then I'd suggest using the severe duty schedule.

I changed out my front and rear differentials, and transfer case fluid at 62k on my old 2014.  The rear diff didn't need to be changed, but the front was well overdue and the transfer case was just coming due.

Thanks for the reply, I do have copies of the glove box stickers with codes. It is a 2016 HC with 8speed.  Does that help with the question?

@AE1M....just to clarify the sever maintenance schedule, mine (2017) says to change automatic transmission fluid at 72 kilometers or 45k miles. That also goes for the Transfer case fluid. On my '17 6 speed, that's Dexron VI for both. On the transmission, I just suck out the fluid from the fill tube. I usually get about 4.5 to 5 qts, which is about half of the total fill. I do this about every 10k miles.

I personally replace (drain & fill) both both front & rear differentials at 30k miles, along with (they take a 75W90 & 75W85 syn gear oil) FYI, I use the same weight in both (75W90). Everyone has their own preference of miles for these changes. I just like to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for the reply.  Notice you are using the SEVERE chart.  In my Owners Manual, the NORMAL usage chart is on the preceding pages.  I am not a SEVERE user in my opinion.  I put 7-10Kmi on the truck, it's not my daily driver.  It's for hunting trips up north and times when I need a pickup for hauling.    I doubt if I use 1000 miles/yr in 4WD.  If bad snowstorm etc...

That's correct. I did that because you made reference to it & I just wanted to point out that the 72k was kilometers & not miles.

I was just replying to let you know what I did. The owners manual doesn't give any incremental changes for the ATF on NORMAL use. I just use what I'm comfortable with. A lots of owners never change any of the fluids...at least until something starts making noise or quits working  as new. In your case, you probably don't need to change any. Sorry for any confusion on my part.

Did you buy the truck new or used?  Since you have a 2016 8 speed it would likely have had the TSB for TCC shutter performed by now (18-NA-355).  This is a 20 quart fluid exchange where they replace the original trans fluid with the new HP fluid.  I had mine done, covered under warranty, at about 35,000 miles.  This in turn is a free transmission service where you get all new fluid.   So may want to check your service records and if this was done already your fluid may not be as old as you think and have more life in it yet.   I was going to do mine at my own cost around 50k but having this just completed I'll hold off now until closer to 85k - 100k.

2016 Sierr, 6.2L with max tow package.  I did the tranny fluid drain and replaced with Mobil Blue special under warranty at 33,000 miles.  This was per the TSB noted by reardiff.  I was getting a periodic shudder.  The tranny fluid change made the difference....no more shudder.
