No crank on cold morning

Recommended Posts

I have a 2019 sierra 1500 limited, basically a 2018.. This morning, the coldest morning of the year I go out to start my truck and just clicks.. tried a few times.. nothing.. battery is fine, have full power as far as I can tell.. just won’t crank at all.. 10 minutes later I go out, and after a couple try’s, it starts like nothing is wrong.. I’m just wondering if anyone has any idea what the issue could be here? Was it just to cold? Or do I possibly have a more serious issue that I should get looked at?

I appreciate any and all input.

Thanks In advance.

In my opinion that sounds like a battery cable issue. Even if the battery cables look okay with no corrosion they can still be bad where you can't see it.

I think GM has a way to test this and someone posted about it a maybe a month ago but I can't remember where.

I don't have a fix for you but I have experienced something similar twice now with my 2015.

Twice now the starter has had "fits" where I'd turn the key and nothing would happen on the first start of the day. Sometimes it would start on the next key cycle, other times it would take 2-3 key cycles. When the starter would kick in, sometimes it would turn slow for a brief moment, then crank normal. For the rest of the day the truck started normally no matter how long it sat.

The battery is less than a year old and tests good.

After about a week, the truck stopped acting up and it started normally for several months.

A friend asked how my truck was running. I made the mistake of answering positively.

The next morning, I turned the key and... nothing. After a key cycle, it rolled over slow for a moment, then cranked and fired right up. Friend of mine, the same friend that jinxed it for me, said it was a bad starter, that it had happened to him.

I made an appointment with the mechanic to replace the starter. Couldn't get it in for a week, but before the appointment came up it stopped acting up again and has been fine ever since. So I really don't know what's going on yet.

Im curious if anyone has figured out what was happening to them in this case. Ive encountered the same thing with my 2014 silverado 1500 when it got really cold (-30f). Now that its warmed up, it has been starting fine but im still hesitant to drive it. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
