4.3 Questions and Tuner option for power

Recommended Posts

Done some research and seem to be more lost then when I started. Never had a newer truck or even a fuel injected one. Anyways, Trying to find a tuner for my 4.3 Silverado custom 2018. From what I have gathered even the 4.3 has AFM witch knocks it down to 4cly? Never seen a light that others talk about in my dash not sure it it applies to me. If you guys say all do I want a tuner that will delete that. Next I’m running 37s so need one to put my tire size in. Last I keep reading about E85 Tunes witch confuses me. Uses a different gas with a tune to crest power but to identify if my truck can take that gas it says on the gas cap witch I don’t have or rear window. Go my truck tinted day 1 and have no idea about that. My objective of the tune is to have my truck finally shift right and get as much acceleration as that thing can without motor or gear work. Don’t care about mpg or topend speed. If you took the time to read this I really appreciate it. Been wanting a tuner for weeks just started reading and ever post just left with more questions! Thank you guys!

I have to make an assumption that you are currently geared 3.42. The move to the 37" tire effectively moved your gear to 2.73. Not telling the ECU/TCM this has happened wrecks havoc on the shift tables. Thus shifts funny.

Cameron hopefully will comment on this as I do not know what years ECU locks change or what licensing would be required.

What I do know is it will not be 'shift right' until you correct this.

Running E85 would require that you buy the alcohol sensor and plumb it into the fuel system. Then take the wiring harness under the truck on the frame and wire that into the sensor. From there you'd need the tune setup to use that alcohol sensor properly. It would allow you to run anything from E0 to E100 fuel without even thinking about it, the computer would do all the work for you because that sensor is installed.

No handheld tuner will let you do that stuff though. It would require a custom tune from HP Tuners for that.

The 4.3 is supported by HP Tuners as far as I know, same with the 6 speed transmission in that truck.

You would need to get in contact with places like Hypertech or Diablo to see if their hand held tuners support the 4.3 engine. Both of those should be able to remove the AFM/DoD and help fix your shift points to make it drive a ton better. I don't know enough about those handheld tuners to get much more information than that.

I’m running stock gears and been running it for a year now. Trips from FL to Ga once a month too. Honestly had a couple buddy’s lift there trucks and say the tune mode a world of difference so now it has heightened my sense. Could a tune do the same for me. I’ll try to contact them directly then! Thank you for clearing up E85 for me!

DOD is shut off when you shift into manual 5th gear, i highly reccomend ordering the HPtuners interface from Summit , cost about $500, best investment i ever made in a tool

lots of videos on youtube to walk you thru many steps to completly shut off DOD mode, if you purchase the GM transmission booklet from HPtuners they also point you in the right direction to fix the transmission on the 6 speed.. or just go straight to a tuners shop and pay them to fix the software flaws

Cant speak for the tuners as our teenagers daily drive the trucks, so they do not need the additional hp.  But on both of our 4.3L v6 trucks (sierra and silverado), they both have AFM and switch from V6 to V4 on the cluster screen.  Cant remember which screen it needs to be on, but I want to say its in the bottom left corner of the screen.

With a lift and heavy 37's it wouldnt matter if you had a 6.2 its going to be a slug.It may not be what you want to hear but without regearing the differential for the taller tires there is no tuning out there that would ever come close to making enough of a difference to make you happy. After you correct the differential drive ratio you will want something like a Diablosport tuner to calibrate the speedometer and shift points. They have E85 tunes that will work really well with the 4.3
