Unknown device connected to my OBD2 port

BigBruce

Question

I have a 2021 GMC Denali Sierra short bed pick up truck. It is only a few weeks old and I have discovered a device connected to the OBD2 port which the dealer cannot explain. It is the size of a Pack of gum, and it has a light on it. Does anyone know what this is for. I have added nothing to the truck.

I took the truck to the dealer and they had no idea what it is, and they did not install it.  I took a picture of the device and looked up the part number on the internet.  The device is a cell phone based MyCar remote tracking, remote start, remote door opener.  Now I need to find out who installed it and why.

MYSTERY SOLVED-- The previous dealer installed it as a secondary source of vehicle data reported to the dealership.  They install it on all their vehicles.  My dealer said they would remove it.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

It is part of the MyCar system. Not sure why it is on the vehicle without your knowing about it.

I talked to the MyCar company and they checked the serial number against their records and said it was not theirs.  They told me that the part in the photo is used by a lot of  companies and the best thing to do is contact the original dealer to see if they added it.

I know, right? This is Twilight Zone weird ...

Makes me wonder if this is GM's latest brainstorm - a spying device - to cut down on warranty claims ... ?

Now this begs another question - did you buy an extended warranty through the dealership? If so, I believe we've just discovered the reason it's there.

I think the dealer is lying or it is a dealer trade and they did not know. It sure ain't factory.

OP, what dealer is listed on the window sticker? Is it where you bought it?

The vehicle was originally delivered to a dealer in Victoria, TX in Nov 2020.  Then it was transferred to a dealer near Dallas.  Then it was transferred to my dealer in San Antonio, TX.  When I got the vehicle in Jan 2021, it had 215 miles on it.  So, one of the first two dealers added this device.  I will call them later today to find out what they know.

Looking at MyCar website it appears to be a 3rd party device that adds some features that may or may not be part of the vehicle's factory devices.   Not sure why all the "big brother hysteria" though.  It has a simple plug-in connector and is out in the open so that it can be seen easily.  Looks like there is zero effort applied to hide it.  The MyCar website has enough information for you to figure out how to use it for whatever is not already part of the OEM equipment.

If you were to contact the dealership that installed it, you could find out what the advantage is for the buying customer.  It may simply be a way for the credit company to keep tabs on THEIR vehicle.  Purchasing a near $100k (in Canada) vehicle with cash is hardly the norm for new vehicle purchasers.

Did your remote start stop working after you removed this? I have a 21 Chevy Trail Boss and remote start from the Chevy app stopped working for me.

I just purchased a 2022 2500HD. I am getting the same alert in the myGMC app, “Unable to retrieve diagnostic data…remove any attached devices from the diagnostic port and try again”.  This truck has the same device installed. Pretty sure it is related to a “SafePoint GPS” system. They tried to sell me a three year plan. Opted out because if the truck is stolen, I don’t want it back. Looks like they installed the system anyway. SafePoint appears to be a tool dealerships use to track vehicles stolen from their lots, and likely a tool to track for repossession purposes. To remove it, it looks like the OBD2 port will have to be replaced.
