HMI upgrade for android auto

Recommended Posts

Just figured I would ask other members since I know others have upgraded their radio on their truck. I have a K2 series Silverado and am looking to upgrade the factory radio to have the latest software (more than likely it is very costly to just have it updated by the dealer) to address issues with the radio randomly rebooting itself or dropping out my USB hard drive like it loves to do.

With this upgrade I wanted to just have a radio that I can gain android auto and keep the dvd/cd, radio, and USB media playback function.

Can anyone tell me if you are able to connect your phone to one of the USB ports in the jump seat and use android auto for navigation and at the same time use the other USB for media playback? I want to have the experience like you have with onstar navigation or onboard GPS navigation where it will alert you on upcoming turns but still play music through your USB drive but I am not sure if that is how android auto will cooperate.

If there were any nice features to add on I would get the radio unlocked but I have no concern for buying an adapter for the backup camera to be live at all times or video in motion. I also do not plan to upgrade my cluster to allow android auto functions through the steering wheel but I am fine with using the radio itself to control the functions.

Any help with confirming that I am able to play directions back at the same time as playback of music through USB would be greatly appreciated.

Look into Navtool. They might make a module that you can hardwire and pretty much retrofit that into your factory system so you don't lose any factory functions.

I'm at page 71 of the 85 and still see no reference to someone attempting to play audio through a USB connected flash drive at the same time using the other USB port for android auto/car play to have navigation and have the audio cues and directions playing over the speaker.

All I want to know is if I can get the radio to combine audio like I know I can do with factory navigation.

Going to say no, if you browse through the media function, it gives you one option at a time.

To connect and control a device: 1. Connect one end of the standard USB cable to the device's dock connector. 2. Connect the other end to a USB port in the center console. See Center Console Storage 0 120. 3. Press MEDIA to select the source.

WAMS can do the programming that you need.

If you have the i05 radio, you’ll have the larger screen with the onstar GPS. I06 radio has the factory navigation. If you navigate the site, you can get a list of options that work for you. It all depends on your year truck also. Chris at WAMS would be the ONLY person I would trust with the programming. I had a newer
I06 HMI (with nav) programmed for my truck and I got the CarPlay/AAuto and it’s awesome. I may be one of the few without unlimited data (LOL!) so I use the factory Nav more often. I had my HMI unlocked, so I also got the reverse camera harness from harnessdr.com (pgamboa on here) and I can check behind me while I’m driving. He has YouTube videos that list all the features that can be added.

Dang that is what I was fearing would be the case. I am having WAMS program the HMI. I guess I will have to take a peek at one of my trucks at work and see if it will allow me to combine audio but I was pretty sure you can't do that unless it's OEM navigation or onstar.

I didn't get to test on our version of the HMI at work but a coworker has the next gen radio on a 18 Trax and that worked to play music from my USB drive as well as turn down the sound and play directions while viewing the screen on android auto so I think it would work on the 2.5 HMI.

Has anyone swapped their USB hub prior to having the newer HMI upgraded? I have a newer one coming in the mail and was thinking to swap it out prior to getting my new HMI/Radio from WAMS but didn't know if that would hurt anything.

Well my new USB did not come in the mail today. Go figure.

I was trying to find how the USB that newer editions have in the upper glovebox of the dashboard is connected. My edition does not have one but I was thinking maybe that could help with speed and possibly power output for charging.

From what I recall, there was a mini-USB port free on the factory HMI and I suspect that it is what can be used to connect to another USB adapter if I can source the part number for the factory glovebox USB port.
