Has this ever happened to you?

I am thinking of trading up to a 04 2500HD D/A CC 4x4. I found the exact truck I am wanting aprox. a month ago on a lot about 1 hour from me. Talked with my local dealer the middle of last week and he is going to give me a very good deal.

The trouble is on Monday the out of town dealership says they do not have the truck! "HOLD ON" I looked at the truck Sunday, made a special trip by there lot Wedneday looked at it again and at the sticker to make sure it was the same truck and it is.

Called my dealer and told him. He called them back and told them I had seen the truck, they said oh yea we do have it. As of 5PM EST the dealership still will not let the truck go

When I bought my truck I was looking for a 1500HD with LT trim in light Pewter. I found the truck I wanted at a dealer about 75 miles from here. It was exactly what I wanted.

My dealer tried to do a dealer trade and an outright buy off the other dealer, but they would not let the truck go...

We worked them for about a week, with no luck.

Then the owner of the dealership came up to me and told me that he had forgotten about the 2500HD LT that I bought. He said he had gotten his shipping invoices and the truck would be here in a day or two and wondered if I'd be interested in the same truck but a 2500HD instead of a 1500HD. He split the difference in price with me, and I bought my 2500HD.

So to make a long story short, dealers aren't obligated to trade or sell other dealers, especially if they think they have a "hot selling" vehicle.

I didn't go through exactly that, but the truck I wanted was about 100 miles away at another dealer. My local dealer was trying to trade for it, but the other dealer didn't want to give it up. They had just gotten it and felt it was a hot commodity. My dealer didn't have anything they wanted in trade. It took about a week, but they finally made the trade and I got the truck through my local dealership.

So the dealer with your truck doesn't have to give it up. I would say give you guy a couple days to make a trade, and put the pressure on them. But don't wait to long, you don't want the truck to get sold. Then go directly to the other dealer. Bottom line, get the truck you want, don't let the dealer get in your way.

Good luck.

Its Always better to buy a truck from the dealer that ordered it from the factory. He gets the holdback money which gives him some profit before he tries to squeeze you for $$ above "invoice". There are dealers hear that advertise $50 over invoice, then they try to make you buy the $700 "protection package" They lie, they cheat, and then you still buy from them...

Just like with everything else, you'll find good and bad. This applies to new car salesmen too. One thing you should remember is that selling cars is their livelyhood, and there is some level of deception to sales in general. The guy that wins in the end is the one that is most bullheaded.(salesman/customer) And I don't think that you'll find any salesmen in line for a sainthood. :D

My advice to any one, is that you should never let the fact that you want or need a new rig cloud your judgement. The difference in the guys that get good deals, and the ones that get bad deals, are the ones that keep themselves in the "drivers seat". I got an awesome deal on my truck, but I was careful not to get in a hurry on selecting a dealer from which to order my truck through. He even through in a full tank of gas, which I was not expecting.

And there are no ethics laws against using a different dealer, or playing one against the other. After all it is YOUR money. Don't be suprised if a dealer has a completely different attitude about the sale, if he finds that you have been shopping around. ( this could have positive, and negative effects as well ) If this guy/gal suddenly becomes more aggressive in trying to make the sale you could definately find your self benefiting in the end. If he/she suddenly becomes disinterested in making the sale, how do you think the service after the sale will be? A 30~40k investment is something that should be thought through all the way to the end. -Unless you have that kind of money behind your couch cushions!

Good luck!

As a nice gesture to my local dealer I would give them the chance to sell me the vehicle. If they don't succeed I wouldn't hesitate buying it from the other dealer. The local dealer is glad to look after your vehicle regardless where you bought it. Perhaps your local dealer will be more sensitive to ordering vehicles that are in demand,

Larry.

Well here is how it turned out today. Out of town dealer(ootd) wil not trade with my dealer, (ootd) wanted to trade for another diesel and my dealer did not have one. SO... I gave the (ootd) a chance to sell me the truck. He was about $3000.00 off on his price, so I told him to keep his truck I was not in a hurry I would order me one. I called my dealer and put my order in this afternoon.

The local dealer here told me to take my vehicle to the place I purchased it when I went in for warranty work. That was 90 miles away. So I got on the phone to GM and boy did things change from that day on. They treat me quite well now.

I will have my truck a while just because I dont want to deal with the dealership for a LONG time. I would switch out trucks more often if it wasnt such a pain in the ass!

I agree that the joy of getting a new vehicle is always dampened by the experience you go through to buy the darn thing!

  • 3 weeks later...

I took advantage of an offer from the company that I work for and purchased my own truck for work use. As they would be paying me $ 1,100.00 per month for the truck plus .26 cents per mile, they wanted it to be white. The only one that my dealer could find that met my requirements was 500 miles away.

It was going to cost me about $ 400.00 to have the truck shipped in. As I had been dealing with this dealer for 10 years (previous company vehicles), the Service Manager actually persuaded the dealer to pay the shipping charges.

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado LS 2500 HD 4x4 Long Box, White Exterior/Charcoal Interior, 6.0 Vortec, 4 Spd. Auto, 40/20/40 front seat. I had a Spray-In Boxliner, Canopy, Mud Flaps, Brake Protection Kit, Tailgate Lock installed by the dealer and included in my 60 Month - 0 % Financing package.

Whenever I walk into my dealer, everyone greets me by name. I seem to get preferential treatment. Whenever any of my trucks have gone in for service, they have always given me a 'complimentary' wash and polish.

By the sounds of it, not everyone has as good a relationship with their dealership. I plan on enjoying this situation as long as I can.

Later.....
