100,000 Mile Review!

Recommended Posts

Being 200K is the new 100K. Getting to 100K should be a no brainer. No matter the brand. I have two new looking vehicles with over 100K. One close to 200K. My brother in law drove 6 hours to my house in an 05 Chevy truck with almost 300K miles. Nothing new to him. Between his two girls, wife and himself the average mileage is over 200K miles.

Really?

GM sealed 'forever fluid' transmissions in normal service get fluid transfers just under 100K.

'Forever fluid' severe service life time is still 45K.

A quart in 2K is a GM 'normal'

GM gave up on Ecotec 4's

GM thinks 100K is 'best case' lifetime.

Are you not the guy who wont buy an AFM or DFM because?

Short lifetime?

Mechanical nightmare?

Ridiculous complexity?

Don't trust the technology?

Odd thing to hear you say.

Truck don't know what names on it or what year it is.

Knows how it's been treated though.

Up through the 90s 100K miles was considered wore out. Now is 200K. I wasn’t counting the Frankenstein engines. Even Our 05 Elantra is halfway to 200K. I wouldn’t even consider GM turbo engines into the mix. It isn’t all about GM, thank goodness.

Looking for information if you have it; perspective for the statement if you don't.

I got my answer.

Really? It’s easy to look up. I did. You seem to like numbers. The average automobile life by the seventies was 100K miles. By the 2000s it was 200K miles. Done playing now. #idiot

Actually a quart every thousand miles is considered normal by many manufacturers now with low tension piston rings, and carbon build being very common on direct injection engines..

I had a 99 Ford 4.6 use a qt every 2500 miles from new until 135K miles at trade in. At 20K I put a vortec s/c on it. And a 94 z-28 same amount for 140K miles until sold. Both fell into normal perimeters according to manufacturers.

We have a Terrain with the Ecotec 2.4 that was using oil. Warranty has been extended to 150K and the marker they used during the  process was a quart in 2K. That was my reference for that statement. It's what was printed in the TSB. Of course my first quart in 600 miles was undocumented by them so.....I and my local shop have it down to a few ounces in 2K now. Not thanks GM.

That said in the early 70's I do remember the 454 would not be warrantied for consumption until greater than a quart in 500 miles. I suppose the limit will always be a bit below the claim ?

Okay all that being what it is I can find nothing CONCRETE to support the idea of 200K being the new 100K.

I'm looking for data, truth, not opinions.

I have some of my own.

Interesting, a person who’s considered a stat man can’t find anything that states a vehicle life expectancy has risen to 200k miles. A simple search on the net will give plenty of articles to that affect. Of course GMs trying to defeat some of that with their Frankenstein engines. There’re not only game in town. Myself recently hitting my midway point of my sixth decade. Experienced points, carburetors, and 4K mile tune ups. As well as alternator, transmission, carburetor, water pumps etc changes being common half way through a vehicle life. That was around 100k miles. Now a couple fluid changes and spark plugs is the normal in that span of time. So yea 200K the new normal. No brainer.
