When will GM raise the Torque on the Duramax ?

Recommended Posts

Personally I would love to see a HD Duramax between the 3.0 and 6.6. I don't really need something that tows 30,000lbs. If you could get me a smaller Duramax rated for say 15,000lbs, but got 25 MPG highway empty, I would definitely sell my 2020 Duramax for that. Most likely there is not enough price difference between the gas and current diesel to justify a smaller diesel, but a guy can dream.

I don't know ... maybe it's just me. There's something comforting in being able to pull 12K lbs up a 6 degree incline at the speed limit and still have throttle left. Even if a medium sized diesel that would marginally tow my trailer were offered, I'd still probably opt for the big gun. That said, I admit I am biased because my truck is not my daily driver.

I believe the biggest factor on fuel milage on the big trucks is the weight of the trucks and wind resistance/drag, not engine displacement.     It takes x amount of power to push them down the road and it takes x amount of fuel to make that power.  I don't really see a huge fuel savings by going to a smaller engine if they keep the size and shape of the trucks the same.

That, and they're diesels so you don't get pump loss associated with a throttle valve that would be more closed on a larger gasoline engine.

Automotive manufacturers are shifting more and more resources to Electronic Vehicles and less to internal combustion engines.  I don't expect another new diesel engine to be produced by any of the current  producers.  Emissions, fuel economy regs and cost to manufacture these engines will sideline them in favor of EV's.  EV's are in the news and their popularity and acceptance will grow rapidly in the next decade. Some will say it ain't so - but it's inevitable.

I would only doubt this because dedicated engine manufacturers like Cummins need to keep the lights on while they develop electric powertrains... Rams will still keep the Cummins I-6 for a while.  And to compete, Ford will keep the Stroke and GM will keep the Max.  Frankly, the best powertrain for HD pickups probably would be a diesel hybrid or a locomotive-style diesel electric generator system.  Coast to coast on 2 tanks?  I'll take it.

Remember the titan xd and how successful it was.lol.

I agree though, for what I do, I don’t need 1000 ftlbs. The 3.0 duramax is a sweet setup but lacks the payload/tow rating. I love my 2500hd gasser but 25-30 mpgs empty on the freeway would be cool instead of 12.

FWIW, an empty truck running the 6.6 dmax will get a lot more than 12 when running interstate.

Maybe i'm not fully understanding what you're trying to say, but my 6.6 Duramax got 22-24mpg on the freeway before I put 37's on it.  And even with 75 pound all terrain tires on each corner, I still get 18mpg.

I agree, I definitely don't need anywhere near the towing capacity that I have, but I guess I come from the mentality of, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.  The wife and I have been looking at some toy haulers though, so if we pull the trigger on that, then i'll be glad I've got the truck that I have.

Yea that’s the problem with toyhaulers.....start loading them up and they get heavy. We have one of those “ 1/2 ton tow-ables” lololol....not really when you have all your crap in it. It’s like dragging a parachute down the freeway.
