Transmission Fluid & Filter

Recommended Posts

I have a '18 Silverado 1500 z71 8 speed transmission. I cant seem to find the part number for the trans fluid filter. I see one on Amazon that says it fits but in the description it says "for 6 speed trans." Does this make a difference? I also noticed AC Delco makes a synthetic trans fluid (Dexron v1). Any thoughts on if this is better for a truck with 90k than just reg dexron?

I assume 1500 Denali and HighCountry are the only ones with 8-speed transmission.

Be careful buying GM parts from other sources as they may not be correct parts.  Go to a local dealer with your vin to get the correct part.

TF922 is the part number you need for the 8 speed transmission.  Amazon has it here:

https://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-TF922-Professional-Automatic-Transmission/dp/B010GPPRQ0/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=TF922&qid=1605879158&sr=8-1

Unfortunately Amazon's parts checker leaves a lot to be desired.  If you put in a 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500, it tells you this part won't fit your truck even though it does.  I've seen that with a lot of parts on Amazon, so always verify that the part you need is correct.  Rock Auto has always been a good cross reference for parts or you can always use Advance Auto, Autozone, Oreilly, or NAPA.

No need to waste money buying parts from a dealer if you know how to verify the part numbers unless you really enjoy paying the excessive dealer markup.

The fluid it takes is dexron HP  not dexron VI.  Using a full synthetic is best for any transmission considering the abuse they take and not getting serviced like they should.  You can use AMSOIL's ATL fluid.  If interested send me a PM with your address and I can get you a quote.

DO NOT use Dexron VI.

8 Speeds use Mobil 1 LV HP ATF Synthetic with the BLUE LABEL.

You will also need to follow the specific fill and level check procedures for the 8 speed as well as it has no dipstick/dipstick tube.

I cant find Dextron HP. It says it is a discontinued product. Trash Amazon tells me VI is compatible with my truck and other stuff isnt that actually is. I should've known better lol.

You can use the OE OTL or the Signature Series ATL fluid and you can look up the quantities here.

Basically if  you are just doing a pan drop then 9qts will cover it with a little extra, if you do an exchange then depending on what transmission you have it could be 16qts or more.  PM  me with more information and I can help with this.

No, I have the Z71 that i think is one class lower.

Z71 isn't a trim level, its a suspension package option.  You need to verify what transmission you have in your truck as there is a big difference between the 6 speed and the 8 speed autos.  They use different filters and fluids.  If you really do have the 8 speed then you should be using the new Mobil 1 HP LV fluid with the new blue label.  This is the fluid that replaced the older fluid due to issue with shifting and TCC lockup in the 8 speeds.

https://www.amazon.com/Mobil-124715-Synthetic-Quart-Bottles/dp/B07Q3H159N

Otherwise, if you have the 6 speed you can just use regular Dexron VI.

On 2014-2018 Chevy trucks, Z71 was "technically" a trim level on LT and LTZ.  You couldn't just get Z71 suspension option on an LT trim.  1LT was the regular 4x4, 2LT is a LT Z71.  Same for LTZ.  1LT/1LTZ is chrome bumpers and regular 4x4, 2LT/2LZ is Z71, body colored bumpers, Z71 instrument cluster.

GMC on the other hand, Z71 was just a mechanical option 2014-2018.

So if OP has an LT Z71, he has a 6 speed.  If he has an LTZ Z71, it could go either way 6 or 8 speed depending on engine option.
