Gear selecting when driving

Recommended Posts

FWIW. -   In manual mode the truck will not go into a higher gear than the one you've selected but will continue to automatically shift between the lower gears.  I think the term "manual" is misleading.

What did the PRNDL display?  Did it show "M or L" and then a gear # when you went to manual mode?  Also, 1500 or HD?  Says you drive a 2014 high country.
Changed trucks its a 15 6.0 hd. Put it in manual. 1 click down from drive

That should work the same as if you started off in the M1 mode from a stop.

Yea try that.  Manual mode in the trucks pretty much just acts as a gear limiter.  Even with the 8 and 10 speed trucks.  You have control over the downshifts (unless it won't let it do one) but upshifts you don't have much control.

So for example, if the shift indicator is reading M5, the truck will shift itself 1 through 5 and not go past 5.  In M3, it will shift normal 1 through to 3rd but not go past 3rd until you hit the + on the shifter.  By starting in M1 and then increasing the gear numbers, you can then dial in the appropriate lock point for pulling your trailer up a hill, etc.  If however, you are hitting the +- button, and the gear # doesn't change, then you might have a bad wire in the shift lever.

The sports cars (Camaro, Corvette, etc.) give you 95% direct control of up and downshifts, just about any % of throttle input, unless the computers say no.

Was going upstate to get travel trailer. Tried tongoninto manual mode and select gears.

Your truck will do a fine job in "D" when pulling a trailer.  If you have tow/haul mode it will reduce the amount of gear hunting.  I like to play with the "M" mode but I know the truck will do fine without my help!  I would be out of character if I didn't take this opportunity to whine about the loss of manual transmissions in pickups!
