DIY: Rear diff fluid change - 2018 Sierra 5.3L 4x4

Recommended Posts

There's a lot of very good oils on the market......the reason I chose Amsoil in particular, was from watching Project Farm on Youtube. This guy does simple, easy to understand testing in his garage. Best part is, he seems completely unbiased, and does these testing videos as a hobby.

I love watching car-nerd stuff like this:

Thanks for the input folks.

I know you like your Amsoil. More power to you, but it’s not for me.

It’s not for everyone, hope everything works out for ya and stay safe!

My take on Bank's and his test.  He is targeting the 3/4 ton an up trucks.  He doesn't have any covers for the half tons.  To me this means the differential is more of a concern since the 3/4 ton and up trucks are worked harder so the rear diff see's more wear and tear.

I’d have to agree with you. I’m not falling for his marketing though. Yes, engineering design is everything but my G2 is angled inside, he’s focusing on square tubs. I immediately found on his design a major flaw, 3/4 tons already have very low rear diffs, his drops even lower in order to spoon for extra airflow easily capturing road debris, packing up thus eliminating the ability to have his intended air cooling. But, the worst thing about it is it’s an accident just waiting to happen, piss poor to low of a design easily damaging if not destroying your rear Diff along with stranding you in the middle of no where.

By the way, all Diff Covers, no matter the design cannot stop aeration from happening as it’s one thing to making a marketing video while the vehicle is up in the air and gears turning, it’s completely different while driving and vibrations causing serious jarring within the Diff cover. Compare the G2 to a Banks, see for yourself that the G2 is a better design as it’s curved but tucked in without creating caking up from road debris or the serious weak points as the Banks reaches out looking for something to wack while driving.

My experiences are based off of many years of excellent experiences on lots of 4x4’s with G2 Gear and axle. I actually OffRoad every weekend and that Banks Diff Cover would’ve gotten me stuck either by embedding itself on something or snapping off destroying my rear end.

Good luck to everyone and God Bless!

I did ask them last week through their chat function on the website about covers for the 1500's.  They said that they are working on them.  We'll see how important us small truck owners are to Mr. Banks...

I am one of those who pushes my 1500 to near it's limit.  I like to make improvements, albeit small ones, to my 1500 to make it the best it can be.  I started looking at covers with a drain plug to ease future fluid changes then started looking at how I can get a better functioning cover at the same time.

@Black02Silverado - I currently do not have an Amsoil contact, can you tell me if there is an advantage to choosing a dealer online vs finding a local dealer?  Feel free to get back to me in a pm if you'd rather. Thanks!

Matt,  no advantage per say going local or online.  Local you might be able to get product from a dealer as you need it.  I do know that some don't stock product and some do.

Having me as your servicing dealer you help support this forum since I'm a sponsor.

Also if you plan on using AMSOIL in the future, then becoming a Preferred Customer is the way to go.  That way you get everything at the wholesale price plus benefits of promotions that AMSOIL puts on at times.  You also get points every time you make a purchase and those points can be used for future purchases.
