EcoTec3 Carbon Build-up - Likelihood of being a problem?

Recommended Posts

I previously had a 2008 Avalanche with the 5.3 Vortec engine.  I was aware of AFM issues but it seemed like all trucks have some issue to be concerned with.  The valve cover was replaced by the PO.  Still the #7 plug would get fouled and I'd change it out.   I was aware but kept an eye on it and was not too concerned.   I had 160K miles on it when I go rear-ended and insurance wrote it off as a total loss.

So now I'm shopping for a used 2014+ Silverado (4WD, Crew, shortbed, V8).  Seems like I get something under 100K miles with my budget.

Is problematic Carbon Build-up on the valves very common?

Should I avoid this engine and shop for another brand?

Is it a problem on some trucks?? Sure it can be but the vast majority of people will never have an issue.

I have 106k miles on my truck and my intake valves look just fine, a little bit of build up but nothing I am worried about. This picture was taken with 104k miles.

Thank you for the reply and the related link CamGTP.  I figured it was not likely a widespread issue but figured I'd ask just in case.  The search continues.

run the trans in Manual  M4-M5 for city driving(disables AFM and improves trans shifts) , then shift to Drive or 6th on the highway (allows v4 mode and full lock up),  remove trans thermostat, and maybe install trans cooler.

stop using 0-20w motor oil, and try 5w-30  instead,  this has solved my oil loss thru the PCV system

I wish I had the same results when I switched to 5w-30.  I still get oil in my catch can.
