How is the 5.3 10spd

Recommended Posts

I can’t say for the Trailboss but my stepdad just bought a new Sierra SLT X31 and I drove it this weekend and I was impressed how well the 5.3L and 10 spd worked together.
I had 2 Sierra SLT’s 2016, 2017. Both with the 5.3L and 8 spd and this new combination blows them out of the water. The 10 spd just behaves better, shifts smoothly, and NEVER hunts or wonders on what gear it wants to be in.
If u want something else. Wait for it. If GM is buying it back. Make them give you a loaner.  I’ve gone through this with my 2016.  They gave me a brand new Acadia and I put over 4K miles on it before they bought it back. Something to look into too.  Good luck

The 5.3 and the 6 speed was trash.  I did test drive a 5.3 with the 8 and was pleasantly surprised (this was after owing a tundra and a ram).

In my opinion, dog slow.

I test drove a 5.3 Trail Boss with 8-speed and decided against it.

Another time tried the 5.3 Trail Boss with 10-speed and while better than the 8, still slow and decided against it.

Went with a 6.2 10-speed AT4.

Average 19-21 mpg every week.

One 4 hr drive, Austin TX to Gulf coast, 4 people, bed full of stuff....averaged 24.1 mpg.

You do not need to push the 6.2 hard because of the amount of power and torque it has.

I continue to get amused that people call any truck slow these days. My first truck a 1970 Ford 240 engine 3 on the tree was slow. I could light a cigarette in first gear and have it finished by the time I was in 3rd going the speed limit. My 74 nova custom with factory 4 barrel carb and duals had 160 HP. My last new truck had 355hp, 380 with E-85. These trucks aren’t slow. Some are just faster than others.

I have a 5.3 with 10 speed in a 4x4 crew cab High Country.  I just finished towing a 6,000 lb 30 ft Travel Trailer through the hills of north Alabama. I didn't feel like the truck needed any more power and the transmission shifted smoothly and never ran hot. I averaged 12 mpg while towing.  When driving with the family in the cab and not pulling, I average 22-24 mpg on the highway and consistently 19 in town.

Well, ok. By “dog slow” maybe you mean a Greyhound or an Afghan hound??

TFLtruck performed a drag race between the 5.3 and 6.2 this year. As I said above, 5.3 is slow once you have experienced the power of the 6.2.

Sure...the tires make a difference between those two trucks....but still...the power of the 6.2 is in another league.

Jump to the 4 min mark.

Ya because we all going to be drag racing our trucks Friday night.?

The 5.3 has more then enough power. If you have a heavy foot and want

to get from stop light to stop light a second faster and brag about and inflate your mpg you belong in the 6.2 club.
