I'm glad I'm aware of this. I'm going to be careful going through big puddles and road flooding. I'm also going to take a good look at the engine air intake under the hood.

After knowing exactly where the air intake ports are I’m confused to know why they would design this like this, I don’t even think u could clean your motor safely

Maybe the aftermarket makes a different intake snorkel. Have to research this.

from my research the air inlet in just to the right of the hood opening latch, its the round circle in the right hand corner of the shroud. Water would need to go hood height and slip between the hood seal and the shroud And be sufficient volume of water to fill the 3inch diameter pipe completely to create a seal and have the intake suck it into the engine. That's going to be quite a bit of water. From looking at the sb air intake install video. the inlet pipe is quite long and has a bend in it to reach the air box. The only other option for water to enter is that the inlet pipe is somehow separated from the air box and enough water is flooded to again create an airtight seal and have water vacuumed into the intake. I am confused how it would happen with the described circumstances. Maby more details from the OPs with the problem will provide insight. IE i drove into a 3 inch puddle and it came over the drivers side of the hood or close to it and so forth and so on. just saying i drove into a 3 inch puddle of water doesn't give us much to go on... More details please, so we can all know how to avoid this disaster.

I'm sure your disheartened and looking for reasons to find fault with a design, but c'mon man.

Not sure, I would think a snorkel would be necessary for off-road and some serious water.  Never did I think I would need this on a rainy day in So.Cal

You are more likely to get water on clean side of induction in 2" water at 50 mph vs 16" at 5 mph.  A sustained puddle at 2 in and 50 mph is much more severe than driving through deep water very slow.  Look at the wake the vehicle makes.   F = m x a

Exactly what I have been thinking while reading this whole thing.

I think there's more going on here.  People thinking because it's a "truck" you can just put it to the floor and it'll act like a Humvee (or hell, a Raptor).  I don't want to totally belittle the reviewer and other poster here but if it were as simple as hitting a "puddle" at 20-30 mph, there would be a much larger outcry.  Hydro-locking takes a fairly substantial splash, hell think of all the guys 'Seafoaming' right through the brake booster vac line.

Maybe I am wrong and there is some weird design flaw but working in the tech industry, if there's a bug, EVERYONE is going to call it out

There are something like 600,000 Silverados sold per year.....

If the motor on these trucks seize from the water intake as purported in this thread and Edmunds, we’d have a S-load of reports of trucks with seized motors.

Water can not possibly gain access to the 4 foot high intake with 2-3” of water and going a reasonable speed. It defies any possible logic whatsoever.....

There is some embellishment or missing information to try and take the blame off the owner and lay it back on GM.

Seriously, don’t you think GM tested this on a truck, especially the TB? Come on.....
