What are ya'll doing for oil changes?

Recommended Posts

Mobile 1 and wix filters. At around 5000 miles I change the filter and add a quart then run it another 2000 miles or so. I have done that on my last 5 vehicles with no problems. I trust my own experience over anything I read that says it should be done more frequently.

Way back in 06 the recommended oil and filter change on the trailblazer ss was between 12-15K miles. That was mobile 1 and GM filter. Amsoil at the same time was 12K on the filter and 25K on oil. I think you’re filter would probably go as long as your oil@ 7K miles. I’ve been doing at least that for 40 years and at least 20 trucks and many cars. Truth be told at least 10 of those trucks went 25K on oil and 12K on filters. On today’s engines I go 5-7 K miles.

I have never gone past 6500 miles between oil changes on any vehicle(s) that I have ever owned over the last 30 years that I have been allowed to be behind the wheel...i just stick to the recomnded oil spec and do my normal OCI.
I just can't phathom the thought of changing my oil every 15K-20K no matter how good the claims may be for the oil.

Every once in awhile I run across a guy who thinks a quart in 5,000 is 'normal'. Some accept even less mileage per quart. GM is now handing out nothing in help until it gets worse than a quart in 2,000 miles. I don't share this idea nor accept it as normal. Hey, but that's just me. Actually there isn't a ring supplier on the planet that thinks that's normal but what would they know, right?

That's just good common sense.

It's sort of like thinking you can live life on a single breath.

When the filter is changed a quart is lost and must be added back.....

That’s the reason why I stop wasting my time e’splaining to Lucy the importance of using high end oil, never needing to do the squeezing every mile out of your current oil filter. I’ve heard folks changing out their oil after 5K miles then reusing same Amsoil filter after it’s been drained and then reinstalling it and adding new oil as the oil filters are over 20k mile filters.
Anyway, I’d agree with using what you can afford and changing it as often as you can which helps engine longevity.

Well that isn't very bright of them, now is it.

Of course not!  That would cut into sales if done on a large scale.

Actually, whether you’re draining a filter and reusing it, it’s not wise to keep same used filter, you’re just contaminating the new oil. People shouldn’t buy $50k plus vehicles if they can’t afford to properly maintain them. Buying Amsoil Signature Series along with their filter will allow you to go at least 15k miles between OCI’s which saves in the long run. Buy what you can afford, do proper OCI’s.

Wishing everyone a great Labor Day!

Never heard of this. To each their own.

A filter is done when it has reached it's dirt holding capacity restricting flow enough to cause the bypass to open. Filtration improves up to that point. To actually know when that point occurs one would need to  mount the filter in a remote location allowing a pressure differential gauge across the filter changing on Delta P instead of miles or time. Changing on miles or time has become a universally accepted method that replaces delta gauges for the sake of cost reduction to the OEM not the benefit of the owner/operator. Industry has done this for decades. So this seems on the face of it to be a little counter intuitive.

Many filters lay claim to 15 K or 20 K service life from their filters. AMSOIL included. That claim is that the oil will be filtered to a serviceable level for that length of time without going on bypass. IF that is the case then leaving a filter in place for two 5 K OCI's, yes even with the old oil in it, would violate no rule of common sense nor engineering preference.

The fly in the soup is that a filter of sufficient filter capability and capacity is used to begin with. Mobil 1 would not be my first choice as stated before, Mobil gets it's extra life not by increasing filter media but by lowing it's standard of filtration

I posted the Beta 75 levels earlier.

Boy I give you credit Grumpy. Why explain it to them. They have already made the decision that this works for them. Right or wrong doesn't matter.

Correct, there’s no right way of doing things for those with limited maintenance experience as some only think cheapest way to just get by and not about engine longevity. Buy what you can afford and with budget oils and filters, change sooner rather than later than you would with high end oils and filters.

For most automobile owners, they’re expecting the manufacturers to build a vehicle that requires less maintenance and why I never buy used!
