Power steering whine

Recommended Posts

Would not be surprised if many of the noise guys have the NV8 digital assist active hydraulic steering.  NV8 is on LTZ, High Country, SLT, AT4 and Denali.

If so, noises are totally normal.

#PIT5544E: Normal Characteristic - Hydraulic Rush Noise from Power Steering Gear - (Sep 1, 2021)

Subject: Normal Characteristic - Hydraulic Rush Noise from Power Steering Gear

Additional Options (RPO)

NV8

Condition

Some customers may comment on a hydraulic rush or flow type noise from the power steering gear. This noise is a characteristic of the new Active Hydraulic Assist System RPO NV8 and no repairs should be made.  The noise is most noticeable in the cab at idle, in park, with all accessories turned off.

Thank you - thats the same document I was referring to.  I am by no means a mechanic, I definitely hear the rushing noise.  Seems separate from the whining noise to me though.  Perhaps they are related.  The whine is very apparent and different.

I’m on my second ps pump. Dealer agreed with me on the original and replaced it. The replacement was quite for about a week then the whine was back although not as loud as the first one. I can’t tell if it really helped but I took a squeeze bulb apperatice and sucked all the fluid I could get out of the pump and refilled with Royal Purple ps fluid. I drove it a couple days then repeated the process. Mine is tolerable but not as it should be.

I know this is kind of an old topic but I had this on my 2022 custom 2500 gas model.  I opened the power steering cap at 2500 miles when I first noticed it, nothing on the dipstick.  After a full pint of power steering fluid, it quieted down, back to normal.  I don't think GM serviced them correctly from the factory or at least made sure all the air was out of the system.  And of course it wasn't checked at my first oil change.  If it was it would have been caught a few hundred miles earlier.  But either way my noise was from lack of fluid.  16ozs later it's showing up full on the dipstick and all is quiet now at 4k miles, thank goodness.

Hello I have a 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500. Our truck has the same steering whining noise. It becomes annoying at times. We do not hear the whining at normal operating speeds. We only hear the whining while at idle and maneuvering the truck. We have had it to the shop several times and they tell us that this is normal. The truck drives and handles properly and stays true to the road. We also have the same issue with the NAV card. A message pops up and says SD card has been removed. Nobody at the dealership could figure out why. I had to figure it out on my own. The USB module in the dash was causing the issue. I pulled the USB module out and found a loose connection on the back of it. After securing the connection, the problem went a way with the card issue and did not return. I figured this problem out approximately a month ago and have not had an issue or a message since.

FWIW

The whine was driving me nuts too and it started at about 5000 miles.

Dipstick read right in the middle of range. So I sucked all the oil out which was VERY DARK (while rotating the wheel all the way left and right). Then I flushed it with new oil (siphoning and refilling). Since my mechanic friend said I should add a leak additive, I added:

Bar’s Leaks - Power Steering Repair

And finished with it filled to the top line of the dipstick.

Happened to be taking a 300mi drive the next day. When I arrived the sound was much quieter.

Sounds like it did from the factory.
