Has anyone had paint defects?

Recommended Posts

My 2020 Denali went in today for ceramic coating and the guys called me to com e look at it. There are what looks like silver chips all over the side I’ve never noticed. The paint is perfectly smooth and it’s under the clear coat. They attempted to wet sand just to confirm it was under the clear. I have an appointment with GM tomorrow and I’m nervous. Has anyone else had paint issues? It’s white Frost Tricoat.

Not with my HD, but I had a 2019 Trail Boss that had paint defects in the hood. The dealer took care of it.

I also work with a guy that had some clear coat issues on his 2017 Denali. He ended up getting 10k over trade value towards a new truck.

I haven't seen any defects yet. But I have noticed how easy it chips. In under a 1000 miles, there's already a chip on the hood where I would expect one. But there's another on the fender near the doorline under the driver's side mirror. That's an odd location for a rock chip.

I was told the Chevrolet dealership had a better paint shop by the body shop that told me it was under the clear. I scheduled an appointment there today and went by there before lunch. The adjuster agreed that she thought it was under the clear coat, but wanted the manager to look at it. She was extremely friendly. He was immediately hostile and said that there was no way quality control missed that. He asked if I had it painted or something put over the paint and I told him no. He asked why I wasn’t at the dealer where I bought it and I told him that they didn’t have a body shop. He then accused them of putting ceramic coating over dirty paint and trash talked the dealer. He told me to look in the middle of the grille and look at the letters. He said it didn’t say Chevrolet and to take it elsewhere.

I drove to the GMC dealer that has a body shop. They couldn’t get it into service today, but the contracted body shop manager looked at it. He said the spots are in the fender flares and that the flares are painted in a different facility. He said he doesn’t thing it’s possible that it’s a factory defect even if it’s under the clear, but take it to service and see what they say. I can’t see them until Monday.

I got an estimate from the third party shop to repaint and they guy quoted me ballpark 15k. Is paint really that expensive these days? I’m pretty beat down and hope the manager Monday at GMC is a little more friendly.

Sorry, I would've told him they get built on the same line and shipped on the same train, has he ever been further than mama's kitchen? Unless they can take inventory on every HD combination offered, how can they expect to hold a grudge because you had to go elsewhere for the package that suited you?

Man what an a$$hole. Does he even know that Chevrolet and GMC are made on the same assembly, there is no way I would let that go he was showing off in front of the woman adjuster.

Go back to that dealership and ask to talk to the owner of the dealership if that don't work call GM customer service dept and file a complaint against him and tell them what he said. No way I would let that go.

You should have told him after he said "it doesn't say Chevrolet" and you should have said " yeah your right the emblem says GM".

I have a 2020 HD High Country Tri Coat White. Has what the dealer calls “stone chips” on the bumper, hood and some very odd places for so called Stone Chips. Ive inspected other same model trucks with different color paint and they don’t seem to have these “Stone Chips”. Seems the Tri Coat White paint/clear coat is extremely soft. Would have thought the clear coat was strong enough to prevent these chips? Anybody else have the same issues? Anybody know if GM I still doing anything to address this problem?
