Originally they (and still are) were mandated by the government to alert other drivers that a larger vehicle was approaching.  I believe if the truck is over 80” wide they are required.  They expanded to smaller vehicles because many, including me, think they look pretty cool.  When I look at an HD without them it almost seems like something is missing..

What I find funny, both the Silverado 1500 and HD both have a body width over 80 inches now.  The 1500s are 81.24 inches wide, the HD 81.85 inches.

Can you order a new SLT or Denali on the east coast or midwest WITHOUT the roof marker lights? Or do you have to order with Cali emmissions in order to get the lights removed?

You can but on GMC the roof markers are tied in to some of the packages.  SLT they come on the SLT convenience package.  They are standard equipment on Denali.  Pretty sure that GM's ordering system will not let you get YF5 Cali state emissions because the truck isn't being sold in that state.  Your emissions requirements are all based on the state you are in, so they would be ordered accordingly.

That's what I thought. When I went to build a SLT or Denali, once I added the packages I wanted, I couldn't get rid of the roof lamps. Same with AT4. Didn't know if there was a change in that in the year since or not. Perhaps they can be deleted from the order as a line-item once everything is finalized?

I don't think the emission statement is true.

I live right on the border of California and Nevada. The dealers closest to me, 25 miles and 60 miles away in Nevada, order all their trucks with California emissions.

In fact, the truck I have a deposit down on, is a CA emission truck without roof marker lights. I am getting it from the dealer 60 miles away (Nevada).
