HARD TONNEAU

Recommended Posts

Installed LoMax tri-fold hard cover tonneau this am. Moderately easy install. Needed my buddy's help to lift the cover onto the truck bed. Not as young or strong as I used to be. Definitely not a one person job. Excellent fit and finish. Sleek looking tonneau.

My cover is at the dealer for the clip recall right now. So I haven't even seen it yet. They're gonna install it on Friday. Is the thing waterproof? Is it the same tri-fold they install at the dealer?

LoMax and BakFlip seem to be the brands of choice.  I believe that dealers use various products.  My dealer had nothing in stock and wanted about $1200 installed.  I paid $833 + tax and installed it myself.  As for waterproof?  I don't think any tonneau is completely waterproof and you may experience some leaks depending on speed, intensity of the rain, wind, etc.  So, make sure to cover your other half's gear with a lightweight tarp or similar.  However if it's properly installed it should do a good job of protecting your gear.  If i lay down in the bed and look towards the corners near the cab, I can see a speck of light about 1/4 inch in diameter.  Allow the cover to settle on the bed for 72 hours or so and check again.  I have numerous items in my garage that can be used to plug the tiny spaces.

I did some looking around and it seems like the dealer installs the Rev brand. I'll find out when I go in tomorrow morning

Yes, REV is the dealer brand.  I was told they had supplier issues due to COVID so none were in stock at my dealer.  There are some reviews on this forum so you might want to check it out.

Ps:  I discovered that the retaining clips weren't properly seated on the rail at the front (cab) end thus creating peeks of daylight in the corners from underneath.  Pulled her loose and reattached the retaining clips and now the tonneau is very tightly fitted with no daylight visible from the bed side.  As with anything automotive, the proper fit and install is critical.

And this afternoon FedEx delivered my BedRug and a couple of cargo divider bars.  That's all the aftermarket toys for now as I'm getting the evil eye from you know who!

Assuming you’re talking about the LoMAX, can you please explain what you mean about the clips that you mentioned? I installed my LoMAX a while back and don’t recall installing any clips. Mine has a slight leak at the front corners, so wondering if that could be the issue. Thanks.

On the front underside of the cover nearest the cab my LoMax had 2 preinstalled clips that are designed to fit (clip) underneath tabs on the side rail. This is what holds the cover in place at the front. My tonneau is LOMAX Tri-Fold. I don’t think under any circumstances that it’ll be completely leak free but I expect any leaks to be minimal. Best of luck.

Ok thanks, I now know what you mean. I also have the LoMAX trifold. Also had one on my previous F-150. Love them!

I'm looking to order one soon for my AT4 and I'm curious...are any of these hard folding style tops have a quick release to remove when necessary or are they pretty much on for good without removing all hardware?  I have no idea what brand but I have seen some hardtops that have a quick release option to remove when needed but not requiring hardware removal.

I’m running the Gator Quad Fold. On all these they have a provision to either fold it flush with the back glass or at least fold to the last section. My gator can be removed completely with a pair of knob type screws from under the last section. I’ve never had o remove it so far as I can prop it up against the rear of the cab with included strut rods to get access to the full bed. I’ve not had mine in many intense downpours yet but lighter rains it’s been completely dry inside.

The LoMAX has a quick release to remove the cover. But the rails stay attached to the truck bed.
