Disable garage door function if truck is locked and off

Recommended Posts

Is there any control over the disabling the garage door if the truck is locked/off/etc?

I don’t keep a remote in my truck because I had a car break in, and the robber opened my garage door and cleaned me out. I was disappointed that the built in opener works with the truck locked and off.

There was another thread about this several months back. The guy ended up rewiring his Homelink opener to a switched power source for this exact reason. I want to do the same if I ever find the time.

The house side control for ours has a 'lock' position that disables all remotes, including the homelink in vehicles.

I 'lock' the remote if/when I look the doors, or if we are away and a vehicle with homelink programmed is in the driveway.

Not a perfect/preferred solution, but it does prevent gaining access to vehicle as a way to access garage.

Not all door openers come with the 3-button wall panel -- but most can likely be upgraded.

I've always wondered the same thing about homelink staying powered when the truck is not.

I agree that it makes sense that key or fob access the vehicle should be required to operate the homelink.

If anyone knows I'd be intrested in hearing an explanation why it's not done that way.

Yes, to me it should be inactive until you are in the vehicle and it running.  No need for the Homelink buttons to work otherwise I would think.

Like posed above, if you park outside the garage like many do and the Homelink buttons open the door, then all one has to do is access the vehicle and then clean out the garage.  Not a good thing at all.

My Audi turns off the vehicles garage door buttons if the vehicle is off, great feature and makes total sense, not sure why GM didn't think of that, I guess I'm just glad my truck is in the garage every night so I don't need to worry about it.

My truck is parked outside for right now, so I don't program the Homelink for just that reason.  If I have a vehicle that's parked outside for just the night, I lock the garage door with the the lockout button on the wall mount opener.  For easy access to my garage, I use a smartphone app that allows me to open the garage door from anywhere I have cell service.  Something to consider the next time you replace your garage door opener.

I thought it was bad when a Ford F-150 owner had his truck broken in and the thief also got the keypad code out of the driver's manual. Now, the thief can get in and out of his truck because it cannot be changed. I think he wound up permanently cutting the line to it.

I rewired my Homelink in my 2020 Silverado because I didn't want it hot all the time.

I posted all about it and you can probably do a search and find it.

I bought the truck in December 2019 and did the rewire a couple of months later.

Now my Homelink is powered by RAP and goes off when you kill the engine and open the door.

I use it to open two garage doors.

I just use myQ on my phone linked to our garage door.  Requires FaceID to get into phone and FaceID again to open garage so I am not concerned about the security of this compared to a button in the truck in my driveway.  (I drive a custom, but did this vs a traditional door opener in my truck at all times which is effectively the same as homelink it seems - hot all the time).

Found it, I'm going to give this a try.

I wonder if the truck alarm is going off, would it still allow you to open the garage?...Because if you lock your truck, then you should be protected. I might have to try it out tomorrow.
