Opinions on two sets of wheels

Recommended Posts

Not sure how important ride quality is to you, but going from an 18" rim to a 20" rim could stiffen things up, especially depending on the tire. There's less sidewall and if you go with a 10 ply A/T or winter tire you might not like feeling more bumps. You can go with a larger tire (33"+) to offset some of the sidewall loss from a larger rim, but then you could run into wheel well fitment issues.

If this is not a concern, I'd vote for having two sets of wheels. Get your all season or A/T summer tires now while you need them, then look for a set of used rims and wrap them in the Blizzaks. They're hands down the best winter tire, as others have mentioned.

I run my Falken Wildpeak AT3s year round and have had no issues. They've been the best A/T tire I've owned. Good luck.

I personally run (2) sets of wheels and tires on my truck. I have the factory 20's with Cooper Discoverer AT3s in the summer which are 1/2 worn (and I hate them) and I also have a set of factory 18's with Firestone Winterforce Studded tires. I have a very steep driveway that is dangerous in the winter and it warrants the studded tires for me. But if makes a world of difference being able to make it up my driveway in the winter vs the coopers which give me issues (even with the 4wd on).

why the hate on the AT3?

i had them on my grand cherokee the XL ones or whatever with the more aggressive side wall and was going to put the same on the truck.

curious as to maybe the higher rated at3 being bad on the trucks

I cannot use them in the winter, I have no traction. With my property (steep gravel driveway with turns in it) they are worthless. When I have to drive on the grass around my property I lose traction very easily. The thing is that the tires aren't worn out, they about 50% left. I am just trying to deal with it while I decide what I will do next. Either get new tires (Falken Wildpeak AT3W) or a whole new set of wheels and tires. I just dont want drop money on tires and then decide to change to different wheels.

cool thanks for the reply. I really only drive on construction sites or the sand when we go out on the beach. Aired down to 15psi a slick 285 would still be ok so tires dont matter much there lol

as for 2 sets of tires i say why not. If you have space and money go for it.

Ive thought about putting winter tires on the stock wheels as well.

I have the space to store, and the tools to change them so that's not a problem at all for me. I run studded snow tires on all of my vehicles except for my plow truck, where I put chains on all 4 tires and leave it like that all winter.
