HELP! 2020 Chevy Silverado 5.3 how to remove serpentine belt?

Recommended Posts

I’m working on a 2020 Silverado 5.3L. Came into the shop needing a higher amp alternator for a ramp being installled in the bed. New vehicle to me and when I went to take off the serpentine belt I see no tensioner......asked around the shop and no one had any answers. Has anyone ran into this at all. If so I would appreciate your help.

There is no tensioner, you need a specially tool ridiculously named a Universal Stretchy Belt Installer (GM EN-51767-2 - Universal Stretchy Belt Installer).  Gimme a few minutes and Ill get the write-up for you.

I tried the Lisle tool.  Does not fit on 2019 Trailboss crank shaft pulley.  Called some dealerships - they wont sell me the blue Stretchy Belt Installer pictured above due to patent.  Not having a tensioner in there is borderline retarded.  Good luck.  I'm stuck in my own driveway like a genius.

Not sure if you have room on the T1, but my l83 K2 truck used a stretch belt for the brake vac pump. I used zip ties as I didn't have access to a stretch belt tool once i was in there. Cut the belt off of course. Worked perfectly.

Thankyou for your reply.  Good advice.  I tried this about 10 times.  There is so much pressure that it snaps the zip ties.

Thanks.  I've modified the Lisle tool to fit over the lip of the crank shaft pulley.  Will give it a go.  If it doesn't work I will have to take it into the shop and have them do it.  Not a lot of options for me - live alone in remote mountain area at 10k ft, foot of snow on the ground, no garage, below freezing outside - there's only so much of that I can handle when I'm lying on the frozen ground with 20 mph cross winds.  it gets old real quick like.  Absolutely ridiculous.  Had an old Tahoe I drove to 300k miles - so easy to work on....same 5.3L V8.

Put a bunch of zip ties on it I had 2 of out 7 break but it held and worked great. The guy workin the counter at napa told me that trick and saves me a big tow bill

Yeah I had to use some pretty large ones, but i bet that serp belt is a lot more to pull over then the small vac pump belt I did. Good luck!

Just did mine last week. 7 normal size zip ties for serpentine belt. 2 broke, first one when it was bout ¾ of the way on and second when it was right at the end but it got it done. I would buy some decent zip ties if u r in colder weather cause I know the cheap ones tend to break very easy when they r cold.

Totally agree...they’re making vehicles now so only the dealerships can work on them!!!

Well that's the idea, right?

Eliminating the tensioner will make the company several million dollars per year, just in parts alone.

If they make 1 million cars, and they save $5 on each one by eliminating the tensioner, how much more money did they make?

Making it impossible for people to work on the vehicle at home will make the company millions per year.

Advertising will making the company billions per year.

They are not making vehicles for any other reason than to make money.

Money money money. Tha's what its all about.
