2021 changes for 1500

Recommended Posts

There’s times I have missed an 8’ bed, but to go from 6’6” to 5’8” is not even worth worrying about. There’s very few items that will fit perfectly in one but not at all in the other. More often than not you just have an extra 10” of overhang to contend with. We make do just fine and if not, there’s such a thing as a cargo trailer.

People that do real serious hauling in their trucks buy HDs anyway. Payload capacity on a gussied up luxury trim double cab half ton isn’t gonna cut it for them no matter what. And therefore it’s about as niche of a market as you can get.

If you really can't understand why a 6 1/2 foot bed would be infinitely more valuable for those who want to camp & sleep in the bed, tote dirtbikes & motorcycles, surfboards, truck campers, etc, I'm not sure what to tell you. For utility purposes a 6 1/2 foot bed gives you an infinitely better vehicle. There are so many things that fit perfectly in to the back of a 6 1/2 foot bed that don't fit into a short bed. If you need a back seat to haul around adults that's great, but it goes back to why the hell would you buy a pickup truck if you want to drive 4 adults around?

I know most people don't look at it this way and just bought their trucks because nowadays it is trendy to buy a truck and they never intend to use it for more than moving Spalding out of his dorm room, but for those that actually use a bed 6'6 is the perfect size for 90% of stuff that you haul. 8' bed makes your vehicle way too long and a joke to drive. Double cabs also have much better proportions than crew cabs. Double cabs were the original pickup design and when everyone realized how "cool" they were, they created the crew cab to appeal to the sheep.

I'm sure everyone will chime in that it is all opinion, but even Hellen Keller can see what the better looking vehicle is. Glad to know that I got one of the last nice ones ever made...
What you dont understand is that there are way more people that would like to have a truck, but need room for people than those that only haul themselves and need the extra foot and change to haul stuff.

It was an untapped market for decades, but now is a cash cow and primarily what sells because it makes sense for a much larger number of people.

For those that want the longer bed and using it as a "work" truck, you can order that.

But also, just because people use their truck for different things than you doesnt mean they aren't using their truck like a truck.

I periodically haul commercial restaurant equipment, stuff that is generally too large or tall for an SUV, but fits great in my 5.8 ft bed. So because I dont need long flat stuff and would rather be able to utilize interior space for, you know, my wife and children, that means I'm one of the "sheep" and not using my truck correctly?

And personally I do prefer the proportions for the shorter bed and bigger cab, that's the crazy thing about opinions, everyone can have a different one and it doesnt make them wrong.

That would be awesome if the Tech pkg is available on SLT in 2021!  In process of having my 2020 SLT exchanged by GM, been waiting to see what changes were coming on the 2021s before I ordered!

Also, you guys going back and forth about double cabs/crew cabs and bed lengths, you DO know that you can get a crew cab with the 6.5" bed, right?  I have one...as do lots of other guys.  Is the best of both worlds - awesome interior space, usable bed.  They aren't as common, but they are available if you look...otherwise just order one!

Just think you would be better off with a car/SUV for the wife and a double cab for yourself. I guess if you only own one vehicle it would technically make sense, but it is like having the worst of two worlds.

To each his own. I find that many people who own trucks didn't even know what a double cab was when they bought their truck. I have also found in life that people will defend their choices to the grave. Again, I'm happy that you are happy, but you are the exception to the rule if you are. And if you think the crew cab is the better looking vehicle, there is no point in arguing anyways.

Heres a list of things that can fit in a 79.5 inch bed that can't fit in a 69.9 inch bed:

Mattress

Adult male

Surfboard

Motorcycle / Dirt Bike

Truck Camper (proper one)

Fishing Poles

etc.

I mean if you don't do any of those things, that's cool I guess? But I don't see how everyone wouldn't benefit from a bigger bed? And again, if you are hauling around 4 adults, why TF would you buy a truck? Any way you slice it it doesn't make sense unless you were to only own one vehicle but need to carry around 4 adults which means you probably couldn't afford one of these trucks anyways.

Again, it is what it is. Lots of people ITT who never considered a double cab IMO. It's one of those things where if you grew up or have been around people who actually use a truck as a truck, you wouldn't even consider a Crew Cab for looks alone...

New dash isn't coming until 2022 at the earliest, and possibly 2023. It was pushed back due to the virus.

Biggest change appears to be no more SLT, LTZ or AT4 Double Cabs. I know there are some guys who aren't going to be happy about that.

You got that right. Looks like I'll be keeping my loaded, Smokey Quartz  At 4 Double Cab standard bed for the long haul.

It looks like the fine print on that order guide also requires the trailering mirrors to get the Tech Pkg on the SLT - which is great!  Never understood why GMC didn't let you order the trailering mirrors on the SLT, when you can order the Max Tow??

Also, I have the 6.2L and Max Tow (which I love, other than the 65 days in shop to fix the transmission, and reason GM is buying it back), but has anyone heard if the GM engineers came through on getting the underhood engineering done to allow the 3.0L Duramax to have higher tow ratings (maybe even Max Tow ratings?)??  I'd be mighty tempted to go the 3.0L route if they did that...

But I am excited to hear about the Tech pkg on SLT, I really hope that is available for real finally...with the added benefit of the trailering mirrors!

Any of our Canadian friends have experience with these Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires?  Looks like that is the new optional All Terrain tire ($200 option previously).  I REALLY like the current Bridgestone Dueler ATs that came with my truck, they perform really well and ride really nice and quiet, plus they don't look half bad?  Hope these new Goodyears perform as well, have had mixed results with Goodyears in past...

Absolute stupidity.

Ended up ordering a Silverado in Feb this year because of the mirror lunacy

Max Tow package on that SLT, sure no problem.

Tow mirrors to go along with that Max tow package on that SLT,   uuhh,   sorry no can do.

Absolute stupidity

I am inclined to keep my 2019 since it hasn't changed much. I also like being able to open my rear door with the key in my pocket, was really disappointed to see that 2020 models removed it!

I camp and I sleep in the back. My Ford short-bed was 5.5 and my head and feet would touch both sides even sleeping diagonally. The Chevrolet's 5.8 is way bigger and wider so I have plenty of space. That being said, it seems the crew cabs are more popular than double cabs, I see bigger discounts for double cabs than crew cabs. I would not consider a double cab, it just looks a little funny to me.

Honestly, around here, it's the double cabs that are being discounted more heavily than the crew cabs.

...it would nice if they gave 2019/2020 models wireless CarPlay. I’d even pay for that upgrade.

This was my first thought. I really hope they do something for the 19/20 MY, similar to what they did with Carplay/Android on the 16 MY (free upgrade). I can't imagine it would be more than a software upgrade, can't see them doing much on the hardware side right before a major interior revamp the following year.

Here are KBB private party values for exactly same hypothetical 2019 LTZ truck with 14k miles, only one is double cab and other crew cab:

2019 Double cab: 37,800 - 41,000

2019 Crew cab: 43,000 - 46,800

(see screenshots)

So it’s not even close.
