Looking For A Lift Kit (2003 GMC 2500HD 4x4)

I'm considering lifting my 2003 GMC 2500HD 4x4 about 4" max. A little less is acceptable, but absolutely no more than 4". Aftermarket suspension systems are new to me, so don't really know all the questions to ask aftermarket suppliers. I have never installed a full blown lift kit before, and I'm trying to learn some of the mechanical pro's and con's of the various systems out there.

 

As far as the Pro's and Con's, I am aware of the obvious, fundamental things like changing the center of gravity and related handling effects. What I'd like to know is....Are there real concerns regarding drive shaft and/or steering shaft angle changes? If yes, do the aftermarket suspension manufactures resolve these problems? What other mechanical snafu's do I need to be aware of?

 

I need someone to respond who has installed several lift kits, or who is very familiar with the various systems on the market.

 

Who makes the best? (Rancho, RCD, CST, TrailMaster, FabTech, Tuff Country, anyone else??)Why? :thumbs:

 

The purpose for the lift is for hunting reasons. I want the best kit money can buy (within reason of course, max. price would be $3.5 to $4 grand). The kit I purchase will not be for show. Strength, durability and function all weight equal in priority.

 

I also posted this question in the Suspension section, but want to make sure I get as many quality responses as possible.

Well, i know this is probably not the complete response you are looking for by I will give you my $.02 anyways because it may help sway your decision after some more technical and factual replies have been posted. I have an RCD 6" lift with 35" tires and I have no troubles with it whatsoever. I beleive there are no drive shaft clearance/angle issues to deal with. I had my lift installed a year ago and I off-road it pretty hard in sand and hard packed mountain trails and have not had to tighten anything, have anything repaired or nothing. It is a great lift. I chose it because it came highly recommended over the other brands for reliability and I have to say I agree. Unless your rims are tires will be elaborate, you will have no problem staying within your stated budget. Hope this was some help to you.

I'm with you on the 4"

 

I think Tuff Country, Trailmaster and Rancho are the only 4" lifts out there. Most do 6" and up.

 

Rancho is the only one with a fully welded one piece subframe. Also allows full alignment to O.E. specs.

 

Tuff Country uses a spindle lift system that I wouldn't want to rely on for hardcore use.

 

Trailmaster is cheaper than Rancho, the kit is cheaper and it allows stock wheels if you want to save that money. TrailMaster has a bolt together subframe which in and of itself isn't bad but I've heard bad things (no first hand experience)
