What transfer case fluid?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2007 Classic 2500HD 6.6 diesel 4x4

And am getting mixed info on what fluid to use.

I have a electric transfer case but with no auto 4x4.

Local dealer told me manual transmission fluid

Another guy there said auto trak fluid

My Napa guy told me Dexron Vl

Who’s right???

The owners manual should say transmission fluid. Those transfer cases don't take that auto-trak fluid.

You can go with the full syn Dexron 6 or go with the AMSOIL Fluid.

I know you have old body, but most of the part are same between "old" and "new" gen. If you want stay sure check on the glovebox your rpo codes. And see witch model of transfer case you have

The first dealer guy you talked to was right.  Classic body trucks without Autotrak cases take GM Manual Transmission and Transfer Case fluid, p/n 88861800.  Its a Dexron III fluid under a different name as all transmissions run Dexon 6 now.   2 quarts of fluid.

I would get the right stuff from the dealer but if you just want to hit up a parts store, its got to say Dexron III/Mercon ATF on the bottle like this:  https://peakauto.com/products/functional-fluids/transmission-fluids/dexron-iii-mercon-atf/

The 1999-2007 classic truck transfer cases are NOT compatible with Dexron VI (6) so don't get that.

You would use AMSOIL's ATF fluid if you went that route. Otherwise like stated above dexron III  You can look up your application here.

It looks like anywhere from 4 to 4.4  pints.  So that is at least 2qts and 3 would cover it for sure.

Yes, that is the older version AMSOIL used to have on their web site.  Why they changed is beyond me.  I like that one better.

Nick-  What happens when we order via the website vs ordering thru a dealer like you?  Do you serve people outside of your state?  I've got a few Amasoil dealers near me so trying to figure out how to handle an order I'll place in a few months.

If you order on the AMSOIL web site, then AMSOIL will assign you to a dealer close to you.

AMSOIL dealers can have customers all over the country and Canada.  There are not territories.  If you go through my website to order. www.syntheticadvantage.com or contact me directly then you get assigned under me and I get credit for anything you order.

One thing to remember is if you are going to use AMSOIL and purchase at least $100 a year, it pays to become a Preferred Customer and get everything at the wholesale price.  It is similar to Sam's Club where you pay a membership fee, which is $20 a year or $10 for six months to try it and get everything at the wholesale price.  You also get a monthly magazine keeping you up to date on what's happening at AMSOIL plus other benefits like free shipping on orders over $100 and give aways that AMSOIL does from time to time.  Also you build up points on each order that you can use on future orders to save even more money.

Also you can become an AMSOIL dealer.  Then you can start to build your business like me and get a commission check every month on products that you sell and individuals you sign up as Preferred Customers or as a Dealer.  As well as retail businesses like repair shops and commercial accounts like farmers, over the road truck drivers that own there own trucks ie; plumbing businesses.  Any business that has vehicles/equipment that they can use AMSOIL products in.

One other thing, I'm a supporting vendor on here so going through me helps me to be on here.    :)

This information applies to 2007 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks.

Dexron III is being phased out as a product name. It is being renamed Manual Transmission Fluid and carries p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada).

If fluid p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is not yet available when servicing a manual transmission or transfer case, Dexron III can be used in its place.

DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases that specify Dexron III, as a failure may result.
