Transfer case fluid change

Recommended Posts

Just recently changed my fluid in my transfer case to Amsoil ATF.......anyways it was real easy to do with the new quart squeeze pack. What caught my attention was the shaving on the magnet.....GM says its normal but damn.....truck has about 47000 miles.....not alot of heavy use. Anyone else with something similar?

Yes, every one I had looked like that on the factory fill, its normal.   Not all is from wear, manufacturing may leave behind a lot of that debris.

This is from on of my previous trucks.

What I find interesting is that most people say they have a lot of metal shavings like this. Now every truck I get, I go straight from the dealer to home and change all fluids to Amsoil. Then when I change fluids at 50K & 100k I have very very minimal shavings.

OEM brand fluids are minimum requirement, aka good enough lubricants that are designed get you through the warranty, after that its not their problem.

If anyone thinks differently all you need to do is refer to the fiasco with the 8sp trans and shuddering.

My 2002 front diff drain plug looked the same way.  My T case was not as bad.  The new 2019 doesn't have a drain  plug and the fill plug didn't look bad at all when I changed out the fluid.

Our 2016 suburban front diff was milky looking but the UOA on it came back fine.

Hypoid axle lube may appear tinted and have a whitish or yellow appearance from the gear marking compound used in the production of the axle.

I understand that.  Most have encountered the same looking front diff lube when they changed theirs.  I just wanted to send a sample off for the fun of it to see how it would come back.  Not like it had many miles on it. I want to say it was under 10k total.  Just was weird seeing it that color.
