What oil and filter do you run?

You can buy 2-1/2 gallons of Kirkland or a gallon of Mobil for about the same price.

 

 

If you spend enough time looking at VOA's you would find Mobil 1 in the bottom 1/3 in additive concentrations. 

In the top third in marketing.

Valvoline Advance Fully Synthetic 5w30 and a Delco FIlter every 5k miles  

 

Runs about $20 to $25 for a 5 qt jug from walmart

 

Unfortunately after adding the running boards I can't slide up under the truck like I used to.

Mobile 1 and wix filter. The filter is also branded as Napa Gold. I change the oil filter and add a quart at 5000 miles then run it another 2-3k. I have done this to multiple GM trucks and Jeeps for over 25 years with perfect results.

My 92 Chevy with a 30K mile rebuild. 383 stroker with a whipple used oil. The 12 years I owned it I used Amsoil, tried conventional oil never drove it more than 9 miles at a time. The oil usage never changed 500 miles a qt. I kept waiting for it to blow. Ran the same the whole time I owned it. A year ago I took it to a quick lube place. A young family member works there. He recently bought the truck. We put in mobile one. One year no oil usage. Nothing changed in the way I drove it. The only thing I can think of the person I bought it from didn’t drive it much, neither did I. 1000 miles a year. The ticking got quiet too. Maybe it took that long for the rings to seat?

I've had the free popcorn, its ok.

 

When you factor in travel time to the dealer and back, and sitting there waiting while they're lined up 3 deep at each bay.....

I can definitely change oil and rotate my tires faster at home. Plus, I can drink beer in my garage, they seem to frown on me bringing a cooler into the dealership.

 

I just bought a bunch of the Kirkland oil, haven't tried it yet, its going in the next time.

Just hit 40,000. I'm on the "twice a year" oil change interval. 

Didn't get many miles the last 3 months.

I bought a case of Kirkland to use in the wife's Terrain as it was using oil profusely. VOA's read well, it's a Group III synthetic and it's CHEAP. The plan was 2.5K OCI's and WIX/NAPA filters. 

 

We bought it with about 23 K on the clock and service records indicated 7.5 K OCI average at the dealership using AC-Delco oil and filter. I know that is Mobil/Exxon. At the time Quaker State Ultimate Durability was getting good test reviews and it was cheaper at Wally World than either AC-Delco or Mobil 1 so up till nearly 100 K I use that oil and WIX filters on 5K OCI's. All three of these oils are Group III synthetics, Kirkland, Quaker State and Mobil. Decent filter and by GM standards short change intervals. 

 

This motor, the 2.4 has a history of sticking the rings some time over 75K. To the point GM actually extended the warranty on that issue to 115 K and distributed a memo to change oil more frequently. But it has to get to a quart in under 2K to qualify for the warranty and subsequent TSB/pistion and ring replacement if needed. We were at 100 K and a quart in 2.5K or so...not joy. 

 

 So taking all that information and sifting through it here's what we got. Rings collapse, stick, due to varnish deposits. Varnish is a product of oxidation and oxidation a product of heat AND time. So evidently 5K was too long for this Group III IN THIS particular motor. It just works too hard. GM's suggestion to shorten the OCI a big hint. 2.4 is just to small for a SUV this heavy and large for the average persons driving habits. Wife is on fire everywhere she goes. ? 

 

I did not imagine we would ever get those rings free but we did. So.....I have two choices. 

 

I can use the cheaper Kirkland and cut my OCI's i half once more to 2.5 K or use an oil with a higher oxidation resistance on a longer OCI. I'm taking door two. AMSOIL on 5K OCI's. Same as my other motors. 

 

Yes, I know, I'm spending twice and much in materials even doubling the distance but I hire out the change so labor nearly makes it even and less inconvenience for me. She isn't going to change.

 

Besides this is sort of a guinea pig. She has a Buick Verano  with 14 K on the clock she drives about twice a year with the same motor taking up space in my garage. I would like to totally prevent this from happening again. She'll clock 200 K before the Buick reaches 50K. 

 

I'll use the Kirkland in my Honda Civic at 5 K intervals.

What I like is AMSOIL comes in gallon jugs.  Just dump 2 in and a new filter and done.  No messing around with qts.  The AMSOIL OE is $26.55 a gallon, knock off about 25% and that would be close to the wholesale price. 

 

For short oil changes like 5k or less what the OP is doing will be fine.  Remember this is 8qts of oil, big difference if it was only 5 like back in the old days.

Whatever makes you happy, OP.  It's your truck.

 

Shell Rotella Gas Truck motor oil (available at WalMart, OReilly Auto, and Advance Auto Parts) and Wix (same as NAPA Gold or Platinum) oil filters used here.

 

Used Mobil1 in my last GM vehicle.  Switched back to Shell (Pennzoil, Quaker State, Rotella) products after modern research, including this:
