Rev Hard Tonneau Leaks

Recommended Posts

The dealer I purchased the truck from said bring it back and they will try again.  But that is 100 miles away and if they did not do it right the first time, then I am skeptical they will fix it the second time.  The dealer also said bring it to a local dealer and they should fix under warranty.  I went to the local dealer I use for service.  The tech that installs these came out and stated it was not installed correctly.  It is to far back, clamps not spaced properly, and clamps loose.  They said they would not fix for free since another dealer installed it.  The cost would be min of $210.  They also stated they could not guarantee they can get it installed properly since already installed improperly.

I also went to a company called Surburban Caps that is a Bakflip preferred dealer. They also said it was not done right.  They would not fix it since I did not buy from them.  I am debating on just getting rid of this one and get Suburban Caps to install a new Bakflip MX4.

Frustrated with this.

Asked the local dealer to adjust the cover. They really did not want to touch it. All they did was move the cover back and did not adjust the rails. One rail looks like it can go back to the bulkhead around 1/16” to 1/8” and on both some spots there is a gap between the rail and truck and I can get tighter.

Also the middle bracket on one rail is not in the middle. Closer to the bulkhead.

Last looks like they over tightened the lock knobs to the elevator bolts that hold the cover down and is slightly squashed the cover with the elevator bolts a little.  Maybe this one is normal. Not to a point where I think it will leak but enough where water puddles of truck is level.

When fastening the rail brackets, do I tighten to 10ft pounds?  I saw that in the bakflip mx4 install directions.

I do not have install directions for the Rev cover.

Being someone who has installed this cover and adjusted it a few times to where I am generally happy with it. No reason to exceed the mechanics classic 1/4 turn past tight on the socket. Just make a judgement call and you will be fine.

I adjusted the rails.  Both rails went back to bulkhead around 1/8". I think the installed lined the rails up with the tailgate instead of the bulkhead.

I have not had heavy rain since to see how it does in the rain.  I sprayed it down lightly with a hose and the only leaks are at the bulkhead and some at the tailgate.  I need to change the bulkhead seal.  The installer did a poor job and in the middle some of the seal is at the rolled part of the bulkhead so the full 3/4" of the gasket is not sticking and water comes in under.

I called Bakflip (although this is a Rev) and they sent me a new seal.  It is a little different where the top is smooth on the bakflip seal where the rev has grooves like in the photo.  The rev one feel a little stiffer.

Here is a photo of the bulk head seal.

After taking it off and putting on, it is not that difficult and next time I will just do myself.

I need to change out the bulkhead seal on my 2023 Sierra 1500 Denali with factory spray in liner.  When I take the old bulkhead seal off, do I clean with rubbing alcohol (I have 70%) or with something else?

thanks,

Mike

I have a REV trifold cover installed on a 2019 Sierra 1500, mine leaks also, at times  very much so that I have water sitting in the front of the bed.  If I take it thru a carwash, there is always water beads at the tail gate area.  I have had water leaks that went into a tool bag and damaged a couple of hand tools along with getting water on others which produced rust on the tools.  I figured some of the leaking was because I was missing a drain line at the front of which I replaced with a plastic line.  I'm now going to be getting a 2024 GMC Sierra and the dealer wants to put a REV cover on and I don't know if that would be the right choice or not

After a year and a half mine stays dry except by the tailgate. Not the fault of the tonneau, tailgates aren't designed to seal.
