Can someone tell me what you think of this deal?

Recommended Posts

My good friends retired father is selling his 2016 Sierra. It’s an SLE double cab with a 6.5 ft. bed. It’s 4x4 with the Z71 package as well. It’s silver in color, perfectly clean, with 40,050 miles. He has a color matched bed topper on it and he bought it from a Ford dealer last year with their premium care warranty that is a bumper to bumper till 75,000 miles or 2023.

He said he’d sell it to me for $24,750...and help me out with the whole sales tax thing. It seems like a pretty good deal, but this is my first big vehicle purchase now that I’ve graduated college. What do you guys think? Anything else I should ask?

Kelley Blue Book says the Private Party Range for this truck is: $22629 - $25016.  These numbers do not take into account the extended warranty or the truck topper which could be valued over $2000.

If you like the truck, I'd buy it.  Seems like a fair deal.

Great deal no doubt about it.. Depending on the state you live in, private sale is different than buying from a dealer. Most states have title fee and time deadlines to register. Again, excise tax for your plates, like IN, can be $pendy.  If you are 23-25 insurance shouldn’t be bad unless you’ve been a bad boy.

Not sure if you wanted all that but that’s what I’d tell my boy.  Good Luck and God bless

Price is fair, I wouldn't put a value on the "extended warranty" because it won't cover anything. If your under 60 years old you'll pull the cap and either try to sell it on CL or put it out for the trash.

Good luck

Thanks you guys, I’m 25 with an almost clean record so insurance is only about 1250 for the year. It’s about time I get my first loan as well to work on my credit score. I plan to put maybe $8k down of savings to bring my payment down a lot too. I think it’s a decent deal as well, not like a liquidation, but fair pricing and I think I’ll still be in a great position once it’s paid off, I won’t lose nearly as much money as I would buying something closer to $30k that I was looking at before.

Sounds like a good deal ...i have have owned 4 chevy silverado's and they have been good trucks as long as you do the required maintenance of them ...all have had the 5.3 v8 and all 4x4 .. the last one i just traded in the end of January of this year was a 2009 z71 extended cab the truck never left me stranded i bouhgt it new traded in at 130.000 miles never burnt any oil ran like a top ... just needed more space so I bought a 2018 crew cab at only 18,000 it like new had everything i needed and was cheaper than a 2020 based on payments ... the 2009 did have rust on the bed above the wheels common for them especailly in Ohio other than these trucks are in my opnion reliable ...

OK - 2016 GMC Sierra Double Cab - purchased last year - 2019 - from a Ford dealer.

First thing is to get a CARFAX on this truck.  You might not be the third owner.  Review maintenance records carefully.

I never liked the hard bed toppers - hinged near the cab - can't really use the truck bed.

Mileage is low and price is good if truck checks out and is in near excellent condition with maintenance records.

Good Luck.  Sounds like a nice truck.

Make sure you take it on the highway over 72 mph and see if it shakes. There might be a reason the original owner traded it in on a ford, unless it was bought at auction and then I would still be cautious.

Thanks guys! Took it on the freeway and all, did maybe 8-10 mile trip in it and everything seemed okay. I feel good about the Ford Premium Care too because its still a dealer warranty and not some use car lot crap, is transferrable too. He's going to do 24,600 on it...and I'll keep the topper for a minute then decide later on if I want to sell it. Just waiting for financing to go through. Now I live in Michigan so I gotta start looking into ways to protect it...I know rust is inevitable here but if I can do as much as possible to hold it off I've seen some very clean trucks even in old age here! Ill make another thread in hopes of getting recommendations for some other things I want to do to it, like a small leveling kit, wheel/tires, and maybe some headlight change would be cool.

Welcome to this forum and congratulations on your pending truck purchase!  FWIW, I recommend putting your modification money to paying down your loan.  Your new truck will meet your needs as is and do it well!   The sooner you build equity in your truck, the sooner you'll get out of the car loan handicap.  My trucks aren't high-end but they leave the lot paid in full.  It took me many years to get into this position and I wish I did so sooner!
