Poor Throttle Response

Recommended Posts

I am not very educated in trucks or mechanics but I am learning.  I have a 2016 Silverado LT 1500 Z71 and it seems that from a stop the take off is gutless... I mean it seems like my truck has no balls.  The take off seems to have a weak washed out shift and then when it shifts again it starts to take off... Is this normal?  I just bought a Range to disable AFM but I'm not sure this is a AFM issue... Any thoughts?

I haven't driven the truck so I can't feel what that shifting is like to get a grasp on that.

But the rest is torque control. The computer will let you stomp the pedal down but it's not going to just give you all the power at the snap of the finger. Torque mgnt, abuse settings and various other things will limit the amount of power. Turning off traction control and stabilitrak can help some but it can still limit the throttle blade from opening all the way and giving you all the power.

A aftermarket tune can help with some of this. And no this has nothing to do with the AFM system, it's not enabled when stopped or at very low speeds.

I got a Diablew tune on my 5.3. The throttle response is soo much better. I believe torque management is also disabled. I got tired of the lethargic acceleration. Shift point are much better as well, fast and firm. Highly recommend getting a tune whether it’s a Diablew or BlackBear. Can’t speak for BlackBear personally but what I have read they do a really good job as well. Can’t go wrong either way.

What is the cost of Diablew? I don't know anything about it.

For what it's worth, torque management cannot be disabled on a GEN5 computer as it's a torque based computer.

If you tell the computer that it's okay to make 6,000 ft lbs or torque but actual torque is 350-400 ft lbs the truck won't work correctly as there will be a huge difference between predicted engine torque and actual engine torque. It's a lot more in depth than just this but that's the skinny on it.

Most tunes just lessen a few nannies but don't actually eliminate torque management.

First you need a tuner. I used intune i3 8245. Check out his website. He has tuner/tune package deals. He outlines everything there. Easy process. Very responsive. Once I sent him my logs I had the tube back within 2 hours.

Ok. Good to know. But whatever he did the truck is more responsive and I’m happy. Much more fun to drive.

  • 2 weeks later...

Solutions to slow pedal in order of ease

-traction control off

-grade braking off

-move pedals all the way out if you have that feature

-paint stick mod (some gas pedals have a lot of play in the housing, mine had a half inch of flex in the housing before it actually moved. You can verify this by looking closely at it and Pushing it with your hand

-throttle controller

-tune
