Dump after cats

Recommended Posts

2017 5.3 anyone dump the exhaust right after cats. Curious to the sound outcome. I’ve seen all deletes but they all replaced with pipe. Sound or vid would be appreciated along with opinions

I should have took an audio clip of my new exhaust install.....thought it was all good to go but the first time I started up the truck, it shook the union loose right at the 3rd CAT. I drove it for a few days thinking it was right but seemed quite loud for the kit I put on. Cabin floor had a nice growl and vibration to it. Everyone loved it, wife included. I took a look and found the clamp had come apart and it was basically dumping my exhaust right underneath my feet. It was NICE but LOUD. Now that I put the right clamp on, it's REALLY REALLY quiet in the cab but has the same loud growl coming out of the rear pipes.

The Borla kit says "retain factory exhaust clamp for installation"......YEAH RIGHT.....my exhaust clamp was rusted solid to the stock exhaust. Bolt snapped off clean inside the band clamp so the only way it was coming off was with a sawzall (hurts to take that kind of beating to my baby)... Anyways, picked up an exhaust clamp from the stealership ($35?!?!) and swapped them out and now it is rock solid. Isn't coming apart even after kicking the damn thing with all my might. Needless to say if I'm stuck in traffic, it won't be as obnoxious anymore.

Had to use this "universal" style band clamp because that's all that was available to get in an emergency late night after hacking off the exhaust. The correct one has a curvature that cradles the union where they meet up - much better now. Probably should have coated it with some rust prevention but I positioned it in a better spot to hack off easier if something were to go wrong.....then at that point I will just weld the pipes together and put another clamp on but I should be good to go now.

Yes, and some neighbors think its to loud especially starting it up in morning at 5 and going to work. I also have no cats.

I would keep the cats just figured with all the deleting and adding pipe just to dump and turn the pipe downward would increase sound but not sure how drastic it will be. I don’t want obnoxious but I would like to hear it rumble

Similar to below but after last cat

You lucky they only charged you 35.  I had the same thing happen to my clamp when I did my headers about 2 months ago.  I had too cut my clamp off.  The Stealership charged me 56 bucks for the 3.5" clamp for my 6.2!!!!!!!!

$56?! Dang. Well, mine is the 5.3L so it takes a 3" clamp, maybe that's why it cost more but a half inch doesn't justify an extra $21 in my book.....

That's crazy considering aftermarket clamps that would work are less than $15 and even aluminized coated for some rust protection. I couldn't get one in person anywhere and didn't want to wait a few days for shipping so I just picked up an OEM clamp.
