How many guys not having problems with high mileage

Knocking on wood while I type this. My 15 has 107K on it. I’ve had a pinion seal replaced, drivers side heated seat element replaced, the seat belt recall done, lower ball joints and the tailgate dampener replaced 5 times before I figured out the issue and had the dealer fix it. I’m still on original brakes all the way around too. Outside of those things, the truck has been great! I’ve got extended warranty out to 172K so i plan to keep the truck at least that long. Oh and I put 5100’s on it when the factory shocks failed at 40K.

My boss has a 14 Silverado 1500 and has over 300K on it. Only things he’s done besides brakes is a new transmission and torque this past summer. He doesn’t even have the AFM disabled and no issues with his engine. This is what I’m hoping for with my truck.

Can you elaborate on your tailgate dampener fix, please.  I have a 2018 that I feel the dampener is not consistent.  Have held off taking back to the dealer since some days the tailgate drops down firm, and other times is does exhibit some dampening action.  My truck is 1.5 years old with just 8500 miles.  Bought it to replace my previous 2012 that had 50k miles.  It is a vast improvement over the 2012, especially how quiet the powertrain is.

I beat on it daily, I have some mechanical sympathy but I put this truck through it's paces all the time. To me it's the people that baby their vehicles are the ones that have problems with them. I'm not jumping it over curbs or hitting the trails with it, just driving it like a 5,500lbs sports car sometimes lol.

I'm very easy on mine. Ever see Driving Ms. Daisy?

Should fall apart any minute now.

I'm at around 156,000 miles on my 14 Sierra. Purchased new in Oct 2013. Truck has been good overall. Has never left me stranded and only once didn't start (weak battery which I replaced this winter). I try to stay on top of maintenance. Here is an overview of what I have done:

- Change engine oil/filter every 7300-7500 miles. Basically following the OLM to 5% or so. Been using Mobil 1 except for the first few complimentary dealer changes.

- Changed transmission fluid by doing drain/fills through the dipstick. Can get about a gallon out each time. Would do this 3-4 times (drive each time between exchange). First time was around 60,000 miles followed again about every 30,000 miles. Dropped pad and did filter a little over 100k.

- Air filter every 40-50k. I don't drive in very dusty conditions and they have typically looked OK.

- Cabin filter once year

- Rear differential fluid around 50k and again around 140k

- Front differential and T-case around 80k. Will probably do again at next engine oil change.

- Spark plugs and wires around 100k. They actually looked good and probably could have gone further.

- Dropped lower radiator hose and emptied overflow bottle last fall (150k miles) and replaced with fresh antifreeze.

- Replaced all engine belts (primary serpentine, vacuum, and AC) last fall the same time I did the antifreeze. They didn't look terrible but were certainly showing wear. I had developed a slight 'tick' coming from the front of the engine. New belts seems to have solved that problem. May have been a little rock or something but I figured after 150k they were due regardless.

- On third set of tires. OEM till around 50k then Cooper Discover ATW till around 100k, then Falken AT3W which I'm still on. They have been wearing good and still have at least 10k in them.

- Still on original brake pads and rotors. May replace them (and fluid) sometime this year.

Non-maintenance items:

- Front drive door was noisy while driving with a cross wind. Had dealer adjust and problem went away (under warranty)

- A few computer updates

- Loose driver seat. Would feel like it would slide left/right when turning. Fixed under warranty with kit GM released.

- One of the rear shocks began to squeak. Removed and it appeared to be leaking and didn't feel right. Truck was still under warranty but I replaced myself with Bilstein 4600 series which were a little better overall. Also later replaced front shocks with Bilstein 5100 series on 2nd highest level. Front shocks were still good so this was more for looks.

- Did replace the vacuum pump as preventive maintenance item (even though it's technically not a maintenance part per the manual). I had suspicion my pump might be on its way out due to a noise I could hear coming from that area. Not long after I replaced it, GM issued the bulletin regarding replacing it if you had braking issues. I never did have brake issues but was more concerned about it "grenading' and sending debris in the engine oil.

Dislikes/problems:

- Have a vibration around 75-80 MPH. It's not violent but noticeable. The strange thing is I don't recall having it when the truck was new. Not sure when it really developed.

- Had a rattle coming from the passenger front door. Took the armrest off and made a little shim between it and the door where it seemed to be rubbing. Seemed to have fixed the problem.

- The torque management, numb throttle, poor transmission programming, and V4 makes for less then exciting driving experience. Transmission is way to eager to get into the next gear and the throttle requires a lot of movement to make power. I bought a Diablo inTune i2 tuner around 90k and installed their 87 octane tune and added throttle boost. Also did the firm transmission tune. This helped some (held gears a little longer) and make it a little more responsive. Also disabled V4 mode which I didn't think helped much anyways. Wouldn't stay in V4 mode long unless I was driving 55 MPH (which isn't often).

- Factory headlights were pretty poor. Added an HID kit.

- Coating on frame started coming off within the first year or two. A lot of surface rust on the frame now. I've just accepted it.

- Paint on front bumper (AT package) is thin or just plain poorly applied. It's covered in 100's of little chips. Wish I would have it wrapped with that clear film. What's interesting is the paint just above the bumper (grill and headlight surrounds) isn't near as bad. Just seems like the bumper has poor paint.

- Developed a stain on the headliner. Appears to have come from the 3rd brake light as the bulb was out. Suspect water got in and stained the headliner and burnt out the bulb.

- Something inside the tailgate latch broke when trying to open the tailgate. Partially my fault as the tailgate was a little stuck (cold weather makes it stick to my seal kit and tonneau cover). Replaced handle myself (pretty easy fix). Can tell new replacement handle is designed a little differently so there must have been a design change at some point. Thought the original looked a little weak.

Overall I can't complain too much about the truck. No rust on the body that I'm aware of and the paint (except the bumper) is good overall. Most of my issues/dislikes appear to be somewhat common. I don't drive the truck as much as I used. Was averaging at least 25k a year for the first 4-5 years. Started a new job in Sept 18 which provided me a work car which is now my daily driver. Sierra gets used on the weekends and mainly to pull the boat. Still runs strong and doesn't burn much oil (maybe 1/2 quart every 4000 miles or so). Since I don't drive it that much, I really haven't gotten too serious about trading it for something different/newer. It's paid for and plan to keep it for at least another couple years. Will wait and see what GM does with the 2021 models.

I don't beat on anything I own.

My experience was this caused more wrenching, repairs and maintenance.

This was proven while drag racing the 1/4 mile with a small block Nova.

Had friends that were hard on things, then would complain when they broke.

I don't baby, but I don't abuse.

:)

2014, DC 6'5 bed, 5.3L, 6 speed - at 78K now. Became 2nd owner at 29K, 3 years ago.......runs and drives like a long cab, 4x4 pickup with very little mods from original. No: oil burn, fluid leaks, H2O intrusion, electrical gremlins (blank screen, rear slider blowouts, PS drop out, lamps going dark) or NVH issues beyond whats expected. Only fluid change to date has been oil at 6K since i've owned it and nothing reported by leasing dealer from previous owner or GMC records.

New: Battery spring '19, new 20" KO2's 6 months after I bought it (Michigan winters), putting in LED backup lights this weekend (921 Dieselleds), pads changed due to boat hauls (surge brakes), wipers (again winter beats things up around here), headlight bulb, rear taillight harness (right side).

Truck sits outside everyday and night, get a quick bath after a few hunts or salt builds up, has been driven fully loaded from South Dakota to Pennsylvania, added full floor mats to sweep out mud and folding soft tannue cover.

Hope I get 1/2 the life out of it from the '94 Sierra I gave up with some 300K on it (not waxed one time :))

I'm currently at 110k on my 2014. I change the oil and filter every 5k. Pull 1 gallon of trans fluid out the dipstick and replace it with new fluid every 15k. It's had the diff fluid changed and the trans filter changed. It's had the AC condenser replaced under warranty. The radiator replaced under warranty. I've replaced the battery, brakes and rotors, shocks and upper control arms. I have fixed a lot of the squeaks and rattles the that used to bug me when I first got it. I see now reason to get rid of the truck at this time. It should be around for at least until I decide to retire.

It's got scratches in the paint but it still cleans up nicely and looks probably as good under the hood as it did when it was new.

120k miles on my 2014 chev, replaced driveshaft , vacuum pump , thermostat and a set of brakes. pull my 3500 lb boat every weekend in the summer , still going strong. oh i forgot i also had to replace the battery, but i think everyone has to do that

Curious why you replaced the driveshaft?  Was it to fix a vibration?

yes, even though gm said they tested it and it was ok. i had a vibrrtion between 55 and 60 mph that was pulsating. i tried using worm gear clamps at various points on the driveshaft and could get it better but not get rid of it. i got the chance to try a driveshaft out of a friends truck and that proved gm was wrong. gm still wouldnt warranty it so 400 bucks later i have a vibration free truck

I'ts interesting to me to note that those with the fewest issues are quite proactive with maintenance.

People like this generally are easier on equipment by nature, don't you think?

GENERALLY but not absolutely,

IMHO

?

With preventive maintenance schedules offering 12-18% cost savings over reactive maintenance, and predictive schedules another 8-12%, why would anyone not be proactive if costs savings and longevity are the ultimate goals? ?

I’m thoroughly satisfied with the build quality of my ‘16.  Definitely better than the “plastic fantastic” ‘99 Sierra Z71 that was the last full size GM Truck I’d owned, and better than the F150 that preceded it. My father also bought a ‘16, a Colorado CCLB Z71, brand new to replace the last vehicle he’d bought new, an ‘86 Mitsubishi Mighty Max. With 345k on it, it still purred like a kitten, but the years of hauling the boat in and out of salt water had taken its toll and he finally sold it when the cab mounts came though the floor and the cab dropped, but it still drove fine on only it’s second clutch, which had 200k on it. ?

These trucks will go the distance if you let them, IMO.

Hey guys thanks for all the good posts on this topic.

Overall for me the truck feels solid and definitely drives nice.  The only “but” I have is all of the little ticks and rattles I’ve heard since the truck was only a few months old.  The most annoying had to be my “B Pillar “ rattle, which I believe I’ve completely solved by adjusting my right rear door striker (of all things).  The other being my passenger side door rattle which I think, (knocking on wood) I may have solved by strategically placing clear polyethylene coated tape around the door frame and on the striker.  All things I probably shouldn’t have to do myself.  It’s definitely the first GM vehicle I’ve ever owned that has these types of rattles and noises.

But those are more like nuisances I suppose.

It’s definitely a nice cruiser though.  And the exhaust note is just perfect IMO (its just the stock system - although I do have the Chevy chrome tip on it which I think looks cool).

We’ll see, I’m gonna try and hang on to it and get some miles out of it.

  • 2 years later...

I have a 2104 Silverado LT 4x4 with 225k miles. Inner radiator and new spark plugs at 100k, New transmission at 150k. New starter 165k, Fuel pump at 200k, Brakes and oil changes. Great engine. It will last to 400k I guarantee it.

This was a good one to resurrect!

Almost 115K here.  All Stock, I've only put 3K on it myself.  Previous Maintenance was fair at best.  No Towing, that was a plus.  Looks like the AC Condenser was replaced plus the bracket recall done.  One transmission service at around 50K.  I just did another plus the Thermostat delete.
