1999 LT vs 2020 ...

Recommended Posts

I have not posted in a while ... I hope this does not come off as a stupid question.

My current truck is a '99 Silverado "new style" 3-door extended cab LT. Excellent condition, about 220,000 miles. Already did much of the mechanical issues, such as water pump, radiator, locking rear axle. Stereo is an Alpine single DIN with bluetooth, HD and XM radio, and a subwoofer, so sound it good (but no backup camera, etc.).  Drives and runs fine.

My wife's brother says now is "the" time to look at new trucks, though I am not in any hurry. I am just wondering your opinion on mine vs a new double cab or crew cab. I want to keep the 6-1/2 foot bed, which means the overall length is about 19" longer than mine. The double cab is only about 4" longer ... but when I sit in the back seat of the double cab, it seems much less comfortable than mine - like the seat back is more upright. Am I imagining that the crew is that much more comfortable, before even considering leg room?

Any other thoughts? Thanks

Is there something specific you want in a truck, or do you just like having a monthly payment? ?

And, do you really need to consider how it feel to sit in the back row?  Will YOU ever be sitting back there while the truck is being driven by someone else [now, it may be useful to consider if the back seat is comfortable for other activities...]?

Yeah other than creature comforts such as navigation, remote start, and a bunch of other BS bells and whistles I'd keep your '99 like the others have mentioned.

I have a '19 double cab. I wouldn't put my worst enemy in the back seat for longer than 15-20 minutes. You don't buy a DC for the back seat. You buy a DC because it is the better looking truck and has a full size bed while also being able to fit in a garage and park in normal spots, not be stupid long like the CC standard bed. The double cabs are technically cheaper than the CC SB but are more desirable (given the lack of quantity manufactured) have much better resale value long term. I would never buy a crew cab with a 5 1/2 ft bed for both form and function reasons.

Now is not necessarily the time to look at new trucks as the manufacturers have halted production. Lot's of dealers are holding out to get top dollar for the inventory that they have. I'm sure some dealers are motivated but the market is in flux, and with all signs pointing to a quick rebound I think the supply will fall short of the demand rather quickly giving the dealers only a further upper hand going forward. If you had bought a couple months ago it would have been a different story.

I tried to finagle my dad's '96 double cab before I bought my '19 to no avail if that tells you anything. I'd take a pristine '96 (not as big a fan as the 99' but still) over a 500/mo payment any day of the week.

Bro, CC and DCs are the exact same overall length. And there's no difference in manufacture quality between them either, that's ridiculous.

More desirable and better resale value? No way. GM isn't just making 10x the crew cabs for no reason, it's because that's what the majority of people want. People get double cabs to save money up front and some weird notion that the extra foot is going to make it a superb lumber hauler. Surprise, it doesn't.

OP, keep your truck if you don't want a payment. If you do and want some creature comforts and more zip when you hit the pedal, get a new one. GM is actually pretty consistent in the "deals" so the time to buy is whenever is best for you. I had a 2014 double cab and it wasn't very comfortable, I wouldn't want to road trip back there. I switched to a crew cab and have had 2 now, never looked back. Neither one is going to be a tremendous hauler, but 8 to 12ft lumber is no problem.

The DC is not more desirable than a CC SB. Let’s go look at sales numbers and see what sells the most. GM builds based on what dealerships order. Dealerships order what sells.

Let’s look at resale of two identical (except for cab size)  2017 trucks And see which one sells for more.

As far as the DC being a better looking truck.... I don’t think it is, but that’s subjective so that one I’ll give you. Looks is all subjective. Everything else you stated you are objectively wrong.

A CC short box and DC are the same length, the CC standard is longer

Sounds like the constant drone from my rich tightwad brother-in-law around in a 175K+ Envoy with the 4WD mode inoperative for the past 10 years ...always unwilling to drive  on a trip because he's not sure the Envoy will make it.........told him he right: "Why waste money it's just barely broken in and good for at least another 10 years.....your money will be put to better use by your daughter who will be tooling around in a new red Ferrari less than 24 hours after you take your dirt nap"

I have a '19 double cab, more rear room than my previous K2. Bought a double cab with standard bed for one reason only.....lines looks better with the GM lighted sports bar than a crew cab which when equipped with a sportsbar has the lines of a big car with a short trunk. As far as rear seat comfort.....couldn't say because my a$$ has never, and will never sit there......if looking for comfort the 2nd gen Traverse is superior in ride, handling, dead on for speed and comfort and that includes comparison against my former less roomy '11Tahoe..

i've searched high and low for the old 99-2002 GM truck  before getting the K2. I did have a 2000 standard cab long bed,  it was clean and easy to work on , the new trucks are way too complicated. they are lease 2 years and burn trucks now.

dmv charges over $500 a year to register and insurance is high on the new trucks too.

Going from a 2000 to a 2010 to a 2019 there is no comparison. The GMT800 was a good truck but the new T1 trucks are far advanced. Technology, mpg, ride, capability. As with everything if you take care of it it will last.

CC Short bed is what sells the most.  By far!  My local dealer has 51 1500s on the lot.  32 crew cab and 19 double cab.  The oldest trucks on the lot are the double cabs.  None of the crew cabs are the standard box.

In my opinion the crew cab standard box is the best looking.  Better proportions.  I had to look long and hard to find one.  Had to look even harder to find one with tow mirrors.
My 2018 was a DC.  It was fine for adults under 6' 2" as long as you didn't want to drive across country.

I had new trucks every two- three years until I retired. My last new one was a 14 GMC. I traded it in on a suv for my trip vehicle. I still had a cherry modified 92 I had for ten years. My favorite truck years were 2000-2006. I got an offer I couldn’t refuse for my 92. At almost the same time I came across a new looking 02 Avalanche my ultimate favorite truck. The only new technology I missed was blue tooth. That was a easily remedy. I took it on a couple trips completely confident. When I look at that shiny new looking truck, the year model means nothing. More inheritance for the kids...... maybe.

It's not, the time to look at new trucks was about two months ago. My local dealership is lowering their discount because they are quickly seeing their inventory dry up with no replenishment coming for at least a few weeks. They had over 250 Silverado 1500s a little over a month ago. They're now down to 175, and this includes their combined inventory at the two other company owned GM stores in the area.
