Are tailgate seals worth it or a gimmick

Recommended Posts

Trying to decide if a tailgate seal is worth it or just a gimmick. To it looks like it works but also looks like it can trap dirt and debris at the 2 area it attaches at. I know people have them and have opinions on this, let me here it on this topic.

Thank you

For me they are worth it, I carry a lot of tools and test equipment in the back of my truck, they keep almost all of the dust out if installed correctly. A good tail gate seal and good tonneau cover is a must for me.

The seal I bought goes along the bottom and up both sides of the box. It greatly reduces the dirt that would get sucked into the box while traveling down dirt roads. In the past I would attach painters tape to the outside of the tailgate to seal the bed so the gasket seal is much better though it is not 100% effective as with the tape.

Interested in this.  I need one as every time I haul anything with debris it falls down between the bed and tailgate.

I installed the Chevy one and it works fairly well for dirt or small rocks but you have to make sure you clean it off before shutting the tailgate otherwise it forces the debris between the tailgate and the bed. I got a few scratches the first time I lifted the tailgate with a bit of gravel still in that area. I will say that larger gravel and such it doesn't seem to be great for. It does keep dirt and a bit of moister from getting into the bed while driving though.

I feel like I need one of these... although I probably don't. I'm interested in hearing everyone's experiences with the GM style ones that just seal the bottom and the "universal fit" ones that fit on all three sides but from what I've seen on installation videos require multiple cuts and fittings that seem to be nothing more than intuition-based??

And also do they interfere with the automatic tailgate down function? And tailgate up function for those with higher trim levels?

Never had an issue with the up or down. I use it quite a bit too. It has save trying to clean out dirt and mulch from in between there. I am sold on it
