How do you know on the Sierra if you’re getting the 8 or 10 speed? (In the 5.3)

If your buying one. It should be listed on the top line of the window sticker. That said when I leased my 20 back in November I had to get a 4WD to get the 5.3 and 10 speed. That's the only combo they were available in at the time.

19 5.3 4WD crew cab 8spd. Last 3 tanks I averaged 18mpg +/-0.3 this is what the computer says. I am pretty pleased with this number as my previous truck(13 F-150 crew 4x4 5.0) was unable to achieve 16mpg.

I am not impressed right now with my 19 Silverado. It has been averaging 17.6 mpg's. I have just installed a tonneau cover and saw my first 21 to 22 mpg's.  I know they make a difference in drag. Since installing it, (only 2 weeks ago) I have driven the same interstate at 82 mph to our lake house and have seen that 2-3 mpg better on the trip meter.

It still doesn't hold a candle to my 18 Sierra with a 6.2L, 8spd, and 3.23. I would average 23-24 on highway going 70 and 20 mpgs going on interstate to lake house. All my buddies couldn't believe the mileage I got with it. I am almost regretting getting rid of it, but the 8 spd low gear clunks drove me nuts.   This new 10 spd is amazing and you can't even feel it shift. My 2017 5.3L with 8spd and 3.42 rear end average 22-23 on highway and 20 in interstate. The 5.3L did get 1.5 mpg better in town.

If money isn't a huge factor, I would go with a 6.2L in a lower trim. GM finally has started to put them into lower trims. I would "recommend" always running premium fuel in it. I don't mind the difference because it's about $8 difference in tanks where I fill up at here in Midwest. I have a buddy who has a 2019 6.2L Sierra and all he has ever run in it is 89 and it runs fine. I want the full 420HP and enjoy smoking Ford Ecobusts!!

Trail Boss 5.3.  23,000 miles 14.7 mpg average.   The average over time is the only thing that matters if you're comparing.  It doesn't matter if someone says they got 24mpg on a trip to grandma's last week!

I once got over 30 going 55 on a very flat surface for 70 miles. I normally get around 24 going 65 to 70 though, but I employ various hypermiling techniques to accomplish that.

I finally got to see the beauty of DFM today from Hot Springs to DFW. Slight NE tail wind and I averaged 25mpg on the trip doing 70-75mph with my 5.3L / 8spd. Crazy.

Best 25 mile MPG avg was 29 and best 50 was 28.

I used to think you guys who posted 22mpg + on the hwy were telling some tall tales. I’m a believer now. ?79430138-AB02-4922-B2C6-BECA6E7755EE.thumb.jpeg.c853d2128795f30d41df01456721512d.jpeg

My old 2018 Sierra at 55 mph would get 28 mpgs going on back roads to our lake house.  We had a huge flood here last year and I took the long way. Here in Iowa our back roads are all 55 mpgs. So I thought I’d take it once and hypermill it. Computer read 28.1   Thought I was going nuts but I made it to Beresford, Sd not even using a 1/8 tank of gas. Usually I use a quarter tank. Was really impressed.  My new 19 doesn’t get even close.  It probably doesn’t help I’m driving it like a stole it either. The 10 spd just shifts so smoothly.  Step dad  finally got rid of his eco-bust and got a Sierra with 5.3 and 10 spd. He is averaging 20.8 over 400 mile trip. His best is 22.7

My 14,5.3,345 geared GMC got 22-24 mpg with a 6 speed. 70-75 mph. My 01 Avalanche 5.3 4 speed 373 geared at 172K miles get 16-18 mpg. So I averaged about 4 miles per gallon better with my 14 GMC at the same mph. My in town is about the same at 16 mpg. So all that added technology that added more expensive wear items internally. I’ll pass.
