"More Powerful Duramax?

Hi - Changes are a coming... I got this off of The Diesel Page website:

The bulk of the '04 model year powertrain changes won't be in production till sometime in January.

Here's a brief rundown:

1- Scalloped valve covers that position all fuel return lines to outside the engine. Should solve nearly all fuel/oil dilution problems.

2- New Garrett variable vane turbocharger - better low speed response - better high speed response.

3- Somewhere between 340 and 360 stock horsepower. The new turbo is responsible for most of that gain.

4- The added power will only be available in gears 2 through 4. Power will remain at 300 for 1st and 5th.

5- The Allison will get a freshening to handle the increased power. Some of these changes are in programming, some are in hard parts.

The new diesel is supposed to be much quieter than the current version, a point I must give to Dodge whose diesel ( newest version) runs as quiet as a gasser even under load.

So it sounds like there's alot to look forward to especially the absence of little men with :sigh:

It kind of makes me wonder what the diesel will be like in 2014, when I will be looking at getting a new vehicle. By then if I keep going at my current rate I will have close to 240k on the ole' 5.3

Wanted a Dmax this past purchase but couldn't afford it. It will be interesting to see by that time. I also should be able to pay for it then as well if I can keep saving after the payments on this end next year. I guess by 2014 the cost for a new Dmax will be close to 50k at the rate they are going. :sigh:

Is it just me, or does that seem pretty lame from GM Powertrain? I don't really understand why they even bothered. Surely they can beef the Allison up enough to handle the power upgrades in all gears. I can understand the bragging rights issue, but there isn't much to brag about if you can only outdo the competition under in 3 forward gears.

That does sound kind of crazy, but I am sure the aftermarket will take care of that problem really quick. You would want all the power you can get in first gear since that is the gear that is going to get the heavy loads moving and it should stay strong all the way through. All the other mods make sence and would work out real nice on the duramax. I really want to get a Diesel in the near future, but may have to settle for a used Silverado w/ the Duramax if I can find one. Maybe in the next couple years. Cost is a factor..... :wtf::sigh:

My uncles DMAX was 50,000, I think by 2014, we will be looking more at like 75-80,000. But then again there quite a few vehicles going well over that now anyway, like a hummer or Escalade. I think these GM/Chev trucks are worth far more than any Escalade or Hummer in terms of usefullness and practicality. Although I would love to have a Hummer! (not H2, they are ugly) How much are H2's?

black02silverado, where are you getting the idea that a new DMax will be 50K by 2014?  They are nearly there now.  A 2500HD CC LT D/A 4x4 will all options is over $48 now (at least on the sticker).

I was talking about the stripped model, the one I will be able to afford by then. I have seen a DMax at the dealer now for $26k stripped so I figure by then the stripped model will be that cost. You figure double the price by then. :D

It would be nice to be able to get a loaded LT but then yes it will be around 80K by then. I was talking about a no option, 2wd crank window, no radio, nothing but body, chasis, seat, engine and transmission.

The RPO Code for the new D/A Combo is LLY. Should be avail in short supply in DEC, and more ample after the new year.

P.S.

I did it!! I am currently working with my local stealership on the purchase of an 04 2500HD CC D/A 4WD. I am very excited!! I will post pics when I get it, sometime later this week.
