How tall are we?

Recommended Posts

GMC says my 2500 HD Denali is 79.82 in tall "overall".    I'll call that 6'8".  I went to a garage at work that was supposed to have 6'9" clearance and it wasn't going to happen.  So who lies? GM? Or is the clearance bar in that garage less than 6'9"?

I haven't managed to measure with a level and tape measure yet, but wondering if anyone else has measured their trucks.  I certainly have a commanding rule of the road but if I have to park on the outside lot, this will be a bit of a pain.

I believe it’s common for clearance bars to be a little lower than they are marked to buffer who tries to get in and really damage something. Maybe not the case, but my speculation is the clearance bar is the liar.

I'd hope that the actual clearance would be 6'10" or 7' or something, and that they just set the bar and sign lower.  I knew it was going to be tight, so I came at an off hour to make sure I could backup on the ramp if needed.

Might be easier to measure the bar than to measure the truck.

That would be true if I brought the tape measure or laser measure with me :)

The thing with GM's overall height measurement is that it doesn't take in account the different tire sizes.  Is that measured on a WT?  On a Denali?  Its just the measurement for a crew cab standard box.

A WT with the standard LT245/75R7 tires which are 31.5 inches tall will stand a couple inches shorter than an SLT or Denali with LT275/60R20 which are a 34 inch tire.  There will be a difference in height between those for sure.

Did your antenna hit the bar?  Trucks are designed so the antenna is about 2" higher than your truck...

I held a level off the shark fin/back of truck and used a laser measure to the ground -- looks like it's right between 6'8" and 6'9" -- wasn't on perfectly level ground so hard to say precisely.  So the bar is definitely too low if it's 6'9" clearance.  I'm going to tread lightly for anything less than 7'.

I'm 6-1 and it's so nice not bashing knees on the wheel or having to tilt the wheel and slide the seat back to get in. Power seats are almost a waste of money in these big suckers. I bet I could sleep on the back floor of my crew cab with the seats up.... oh wait.. er, nevermind.
