Chevy makes for an EZ break-in!

Howdy people,

I drove up from Chicago to Toronto for a family wedding. I parked at the hotel, went up to burn a mule, walked back down to my truck and noticed there were wires hangin from where my XM radio used to be. Then I looked around and noticed my radar detector, tv/vcr, cell phone, wife's jewelry, a tool kit and lotsa other sh*t was gone. I was f'ing cleaned out in a matter of 10 minutes.

So when you think you're cool because you locked up and have a factory alarm, think again. They put a screw driver in the key hole, pushed in nice and hard and turned to the left. The truck thought it was a key, hence no noise from the alarm.

Sure the insurance picked up the tab but it's not the same and my wife's jewelry wasn't really replaceable with exact stuff, especially the sentimental value of a gift I gave her on a wedding annv.

Use me as an example and if you want your stuff really protected, get an aftermarket alarm with door sensors.

Sorry to hear about that.

One thing though, on mine, if you lock the door with the key fob, and try to open it with out it, as in using a key, it will trigger the alarm. I've added a GM 3400 alarm, and it does the same thing.

Tom,

Please do tell about your 3400 GM alarm... I'm interested.. :sigh:

I've got the same GM-3400 alarm as Tom does. In fact, I think I turned him on to getting one. Anyway, it is a very simple install. It plugs into the factory keyless entry system that comes on our trucks. I think there are 6 wiring harnesses that plug directly into the box. Then there is a shock sensor to mount, a siren to run a wire to and install, and a toggle switch and LED to locate. That's it. It only took me about two hours max to install and that is because I have never installed an alarm before. The hardest part was deciding where to locate the siren. Best part is I retained use of the factory key fobs and everything looks stock. Works much better than the factory alarm. When the Lock button is pressed on the key fob, door lock, lights flash, and horn/siren chirp. When the Unlock button is pressed, driver's door unlocks, lights flash twice, and horn/siren chirp twice. Press unlock again and all doors unlock. If the alarm has gone off since you left the truck it will chirp either 4 or 5 times to let you know. Pretty much the same functionality of an aftermarket alarm.

I got mine on ebay for $50 and like I said installed it in under 2 hours. It has been on my Tahoe for several months now and I haven't had any problems with it.

If you have any further questions, just let me know.

Wow, thanks for the info. How did you retain the use of your old FOB's? dealer repogram?

Looks like I'm off to ebay again... :sigh:

Yep, BJ got me interested in the alarm and helped with some question I had. You can program some of the features to how you want them also. For example, I have mine set NOT to chirp when locking and unlocking, but the lights still flash. I work nights and turned the horn part off since I usually get home between 12:30 -1:00 am. :sigh: Oh yeah, I got mine from the same guy in E-Bay for right around $50.

The key FOB's work because the GM-3400 is an add-on alarm to the factory keyless entry system. It just plugs inline with the keyless entry system so it doesn't come with remotes itself. Works really well.

Kaspar: No, that wasn't the guy. The guys ebay name was Tntenese. He actually works for a Chevrolet dealership. If you PM me I will send you his e-mail address and maybe you can work something out with him non-Ebay.

Hey I want to add this alarm ASAP to my 95 Blazer, the truck in the sig. It should work right? Its got the factory keyless and it has OBDII also, don't think the OBDII matters though. I'm seeing a few on ebay now but I'd rather deal with whoever you guys dealt with.

  • 2 months later...

I know this is an older thread, but I just saw it for the first time this morning and was curious about that alarm system. I went searching for one and only found one listed on ebay. I contacted the seller mentioned in a post above, but haven't heard from him yet (it's only been like 2 hours though). Anyway, I requested a part # from one of sites on the left and got this:

GM Part #: 12497740

So if anyone else is interested in one of these, that should give you a start in the right direction.
