Oil pressure fluctuation: normal?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this site, so sorry if this has been discussed many times before.

I have a 2017 Silverado 2500HD, about 25k miles.  A few months ago, I got my first oil change, and afterwards I noticed that the oil pressure gauge was fluctuating more than it had in the past. I'm not sure if this had something to do with the oil pressure, or if it was just because the weather was starting to get cold, so it took the engine longer to warm up.  Typically, when idle, my pressure is around 60psi, but when I accelerate the pressure will go up to as much as 120psi, then drop back to between 60-100 when I'm not accelerating. Once the engine gets warm enough, then there is very little fluctuation, and the psi stays around 60.

Is this normal? My main concern is that I'm going to start pulling my 7k lb trailer in the coming weeks, want to make sure this isn't an issue before I pull all of that weight and mess something up.

Did I read this right?

First oil change on a new motor at 25 K miles.

WOW!!!

Playing with fire IMO.

Why did you do this?

I wouldn't go over 5 K miles using off the shelf oil.

7500 miles with a product like Amsoil.

Look around this site about oil, filters and change intervals.

You will find a lot of different opinions.

I am assuming you are diesel based on the 120psi that you are seeing?

If you are diesel, those oil pressures are normal.

#17-NA-051: High Oil Pressure during Initial Start of Vehicle - (Feb 6, 2019)

Involved Region or Country - North America and Israel

Additional Options (RPOs) - Equipped with Diesel 6.6L Engine (RPO L5P)

Condition

Some customers may comment on high oil pressure or that the oil pressure is "pegged" high during the initial start up of the vehicle.

Cause

When first starting the engine with cold oil, the oil pressure can be up to 100 psi or 690 kPa (full range of oil pressure gauge) at idle conditions. This is normal with cold oil and internal relief valves in the engine will be active. As the engine oil temperature rises, the idle oil pressure will reduce.

Correction

This is considered a normal condition and no repairs should be performed.

No, you’re not reading it right. It’s a new to him truck at 25,000 miles. It’s his first oil change with it; highly likely not the first oil change for the truck.
