What are the most common issues with the 2019-20 Silverado's?

Recommended Posts

What are the most common issues with the new 2019-20 Silverados? I am in the process of a buyback from Ford on a F150 I bought in January.  After this

is complete I will never own another Ford.  I just been doing my research on the new trucks and curious of what issues people may be having or have they

been pretty flawless so far? If I buy another it will probably an LT maybe Trailboss 4wd with the 5.3.  My last silverado was a 2015 and really didn't have many

problems except for the slight vibration they all had.  Thanks

Below Is why I will never buy another Ford LOL

2015 Silverado = Traded in with 53k miles on a new 2017 Ford F250

2017 F250 = Ford bought back due to an engine issue.... since ford took care of me I bought another

2018 F250 = No problems with this truck decided to downsize to a F150 after I sold my camper.  It had 35k miles

2019 F150 =  Bought in Jan 2020 currently has 6k and in the process of a buyback due to rear-end problems they can't fix

My company has over 1000 trucks and Ford is the most reliable, that's 1500 and 2500.

For me personally my most reliable has been my 17 Ram 2500, 96k and not one warranty issue, only vehicle over ever owned. My AT4 has had no issues but its only got 1500 miles.

We have had a lot of steering pump issues, t case, and ball joints on our GM trucks. Most rams have transmission issues on the 2500s but the ZF trans is doing much better

If looking for a 5.3l get a DFM with 8 speed with a door sticker manufacturing date 3/19 or later. The later ones come prefilled with the replacement Mobil1 HP synthetic ATF fluid. There is a TSB out there for shudder problems calling for complete replacement of the older Dextron VI AFT fluid because it was hydroscopic. The dealer will not replace propholactically under warranty, only once shifting problems are encountered. At that point it may be too late if tranny has already suffered irreversible damage or wear from contaminated fluid..

Rear window leak seems to be a common problem on the 19--not sure if it was resolved on the 20.  Convenience package 2 which adds the rear sliding window I believe is the culprit.

I have not had this problem.

Dont want to forget the leaking rear window, if it's the slider. Don't know any specifics on build date or USA/Mexico build country. Very hit or miss if the sliding window will leak water or not.

Huh, mine doesn't have a vibration, I don't know anyone that has had a vibration with those years of trucks and I have known or met quite a few with them. A small percentage actually had it which is why you have to take issues with a grain of salt, what might seem like a huge problem and you think more than half have them is usually in the low single digit percentage that actually have said issue. People just like to make mountains out of mole hills.

You are lucky then!  Google it a few years ago it was plenty of threads about vibration issues and no fixes at the time.  You are correct about making mountains out of mole hills though LOL.

Thanks

I would say get a 10-speed no-matter what, the 4-cyl and diesel are too new to rely on yet. Maybe in a few years. Tried and true 5.3 and 6.2 doesn't seem to have too many problems. The U-bolts apparently loosen over time (check mine at 20k and found they were under torque spec). Rear window leak seems to be linked to the sliding rear window option.

Mine has 22,000 miles and has been great. I replaced the shocks but I had already budgeted for that change based on reviews and previous experience with rancho. The 5.3/8 speed has been smooth and has all of the power I need.

The most common problem is with the TMJ dues to constant wide grin every time I start it and take off ?

Your right, we usually only hear about the negative stuff, rarely do people get online to give positive reviews.  However i think the vibration issue was more widespread than you think.  We had/have the issue with our 2015 suburban and i had several friends have the same issue.  I also rent alot of vehicles for work when flying into a city and i made it a point to drive as many silverado, tahoes, suburbans and gmc trucks as possible to see how prevalent the vibration issue was, and i was surprised to find it more often than not!  Im pleased that my 2020 Silverado doesnt have that problem.  The new platform has been a much smoother ride.

Yep, I buy a different truck each time and sell once warranty is expired.

Didnt want Ford as a new chassis is coming soon, didnt want a ram 1500 as I just had a 2014 Cummins and still own a 4th gen hemi, the new 5th gen to me is just a baby of the HD. I looked at the trail boss and the trim level was too low for me. When I seen the AT4 I liked the exterior and the 10 speed, as well as the 6'7 box. The interior still isn't as nice as my 2014 Ram Limited but while the wife is on maternity leave it was a truck that checked most boxes without having to spend money.

I don’t wanna jinx anyone or anything...but the widespread problems seem to be solved. Dramatic reduction in complaints lately. Even the back window thread has leveled off and not too many 2020s ever made it in there.

Buy the latest production 2020 you can find and I bet it’ll be a damn good truck. Took a year to get it there but my 2019 is finally behaving, and it’s fantastic.
