Tailgate Durability/Strength (or lack thereof)

My noise comes from right under their foot when they step on the edge of the tailgate. Something is breaking, I can hear it. It will be interesting to take it apart and see what is going on.

Breaking or flexing?

It could be flexing. I don't see any cracks yet. If it is flexing that much that it makes the breaking noise, it's probably only a matter of time before it will break.

Let me know what you find, I know, its a awful loud snapping sound

I took the cover off last night and couldn't see any broken pcs. I think that noise may be the plastic reinforcement ribs catching an edge as the tailgate flexes, or the screws that hold it in place pulling out a thread or so
