Oil additives in 0w20

Recommended Posts

I have a 2018 silverado 5.3 z71 with range afm disabler. I run pennzoil platinum 7 quarts and 1 quart of heavy duty Lucas oil stabilizer. Is this okay to run with ow20? The dealer told me it was fine. Just wondering if anyone else runs Lucas stabilizer in 0w20.

Today's high-quality engine lubricating oils are very sophisticated. Most oils already contain precise amounts of additives blended into the lubricating oil to meet stringent performance requirements.

These oils meet performance characteristics that conform to the lubricant industry standards and are sufficient protection when used according to the recommendations. Aftermarket lubricating oil additives are not necessary to enhance engine oil performance and may in some cases reduce the oil's capability to protect the engine.

The only ones benefiting for oil additives are those selling them!

Lucas Oil Stabilizer has a 100C (212F) viscosity of 110 cSt. Let's give that some perspective.

70W Race oil for Nitro motors has a 100 C vis of about 35 cSt.

250 Gear oil around 52 cSt.

Blended 7:1 your 100 C viscosity is between a heavy 50W to light 60W. As it is a straight weight I'd have to actually blend and test it for the 40 C vis but light it is not. Winter would not be it's friend.

What this product does have allot of is 'tackifiers'. Same stuff chain bar oil contains. Make a nice lathe/mill way oil. Motorcycle chain oil.

That's the 411. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's good or bad.

This says it all..

Think of the lubricant as a chemical soup with very specific characteristics. Mixing additional ingredients into the soup will have an effect on the outcome of the recipe. How often do you walk into a world-famous chef’s kitchen and toss in a handful of what you think it needs, not knowing what was in the soup in the first place?

No.  You should be running 8 quarts of 0w20.  Its not like you've got 250k on it and are trying to keep it going.  Or an old wore out 350 Chevy.

Dealer should have told you no as well as GM does not recommend any oil additives/stabilizers.

Lucas oil stabilizer is nothing more than really thick oil with almost no additives.  It is essentially snake oil in a bottle and a waste of money.  If you want to use thicker oil in your truck, switch to a thicker oil.  Do not add this overpriced thick oil to good oil to make it thicker.

If you read the owners manual I bet it says no oil additives are necessary.

From my 2012 owners manual.

Engine Oil Additives/Engine Oil Flushes Do not add anything to the oil. The recommended oils with the dexos specification and displaying the dexos certification mark are all that is needed for good performance and engine protection. Engine oil system flushes are not recommended and could cause engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.

If you want a good synthetic oil with a killer additive pack already in it from the factory, you might take a look at Shell Rotella Gas Truck motor oil.  (Pennzoil and Quaker State are also owned by Shell.)  It contains a modified additive pack from their diesel engine oil, specially made for gas-engined trucks.  Works for me.  No, I am not a Shell dealer.
