Jobs after covo-19

What’s your future look like with your work after the bug? I’m retired little change for me. Trips to visit father in law may be lessened. He’s 89, not many visits left I’m afraid.

That much is yet to be seen. My work is closely tied to air travel and commercial aviation, and it's not looking good.

But let's all lose our jobs because the retired people can't stay home. I'm sure you-know-who will be along shortly with his statistics as to why we should stay shut down until 2022.

I can certainly understand your frustration if you believe retirees are a cause for substantial job loss. I am retired but do have substantial first hand experience with job loss and the associated hardships. I wouldn't want to be viewed as a cause for layoffs! I am surrounded (at appropriate distance) by fellow retired volunteers who are donating/delivering food, money and supplies to laid off and quarantined workers. This current crises is complex with no shortages of opinions. I have no basis to blame retired people for job loss amongst the employed but would be interested in hearing your evidence.

I can certainly understand your frustration if you believe retirees are a cause for substantial job loss. I am retired but do have substantial first hand experience with job loss and the associated hardships. I wouldn't want to be viewed as a cause for layoffs! I am surrounded (at appropriate distance) by fellow retired volunteers who are donating/delivering food, money and supplies to laid off and quarantined workers. This current crises is complex with no shortages of opinions. I have no basis to blame retired people for job loss amongst the employed but would be interested in hearing your evidence.

It's simple.

The shutdown is to slow the spread and try to protect the older people and people with health issues. That's a lot of retirees.

This shutdown is having a drastic effect economically, which includes layoffs or massive pay cuts.

Instead, business should have continued as usual and those with concerns should do what they need to in order to stay well.

Not quite. It doesn't ONLY affect those people, they are just more likely to die from it. And this is also to protect EVERYONE, as if we switched to the "who cares, I wants my money" model, the hospitals would be overrun with patients, and more and more people would die simply because they couldn't get adequate medical attention. And it wouldn't just be those with Covid-19 that would be dying from this overrun, but ANYONE needing medical attention, from people having heart attacks to car crashes as well.

The only change for me will be going back to working at the site instead of from home.

My wife, on the other hand, is a dental hygienist so who knows when she can safely go back to work and what facilities, PPE and other precautions will need to be in place first?

There's no difference between now and when she stopped working, the risks have been and will be the same.

That's why she's not working... Because dental work creates aerosols that can linger for hours, no one thinks the risk is acceptable right now.

Sounds like some of the high ups in Canada think high risk activities like dental hygiene can't restart until there's a vaccine in place. Given that my wife is both pregnant and has an underlying chronic health condition that could make her higher risk than most of the population, neither of us is interested in her going back to work until something is figured out. I'm sure her professional associations are working on what will be required to go back to work safely.

Sounds like some of the high ups in Canada think high risk activities like dental hygiene can't restart until there's a vaccine in place. Given that my wife is both pregnant and has an underlying chronic health condition that could make her higher risk than most of the population, neither of us is interested in her going back to work until something is figured out. I'm sure her professional associations are working on what will be required to go back to work safely.

This one is easily solved. The five minute test for the virus. The customers can be tested in the lobby. My dentist and hygienist always wore gloves and mask. So I wouldn’t feel at risk from them. The five minutes test should take care of the customers. As far as your wife I wouldn’t chance it.

That's the thing with the emergency passes being used for all this stuff. It means they are just shoved out before knowing how well they work. Abbot responded with "we think they tested it wrong", but notably, what they didn't say was "our testing showed it was X% accurate over Y tests", or even "we'll work with them to determine what the problem is".

Right now, these companies could care less about quality, it's be first with the press release, then get the bazillion dollar order from the government, we'll fix it later.
